Of course, you could always buy a $20 Timex that is water resistant and keeps perfect time. Haha. What we go through for these utterly impractical but beautiful and fascinating watches.

OK. This is very interesting. I bought a Breitling Chronograph for my Son in Australia. The watch is less than 3 years old (past the 2 year warranty of course). The watch has never been used in water, the crown has remained screwed down except to adjust the date, and the watch has now got water in it! How does this happen to a high-end watch?? I have had the Breitling folk in Sydney assess it and it is going to cost me $420 AUD for a service to fix it! This is a substantial fraction of the cost of the watch brand new. Is this normal?? I am appalled that this is possible with a supposedly water resistant watch. From reading this forum, it happens to many Breitlings, yet they are sold as quality timepieces. This is crazy.

And the bad news is that they might find some more damage that youll be paying for as well. I had a water issue on a 2.5 year old Breitling a few months back and the estimate came back at around $900. Fortunately, they worked with me and got that number down to something more reasonable, given the age of the watch.

Thanks for the suggestion Roff. I'll give them a call and see if they pressure tested it. Cheers, SJ

If you're storing in a safe, make sure that if its a firesafe or something that is airtight that there is nothing that could produce moisture inside. A big bag of desicant might be good to keep there as well. I do this.

A Firesafe may be a terrible place to keep a water sensitive watch. The fire retardant material releases a lot of moisture and items within the safe (papers, passports, money) usually end up damp and smelling moldy.

You're lucky RJ. This one is 2 yrs and 10 months old. Despite me raising my concerns, I can't get to talk to anyone with any authority as the only service centre is in Sydney and I am in Canberra ( about 300 Km) away. Does anyone from Breitling read these blogs??? Cheers, SJ.

I do fear it makes it much harder to convince anyone you might get to talk to that there hadn't been user-error if the user wasn't the complainant.

OK I have some good news! Thanks to Roff's suggestion, I called the service centre in Sydney and asked about the pressure test. The answer is no, as the watch had obviously leaked and they did not see the need to do one. fair enough. A full pressure test will be done after the service. Anyway, I discussed the issue about the leak and the expired warranty etc. and they requested I send a copy of the warranty docs to them. I did that straight away and they considered my request. The final outcome was they offered me a 20% discount on the service, a saving of about $90! So I am very happy with that and Breitling now have a happy customer that will support and recommend them to others.

Cheers, SJ

I would of thought, that if a watch had water getting into it, a pressure test would be the first thing you would do.

Breitling refused because they were worried about the results. If it failed then they would have been under pressure to pay for the whole repair even if the warranty had expired. By offering the discount they mitigated the risk.

To say I’m surprised is an understatement, that Breitling were to scared to pressure test one of their watches that was only a few months out side it’s warranty, just in case it failed, and they would feel obligated to repair it free of charge.
If Breitling had any confidence in their quality procedures and the quality of the materials that they make their watches out of, should of had no hesitation in testing it.
If it failed then to me the watch was not fit for purpose.

Well I'm speculating, but I'm sure that was the situation - no other reason not to do it, it's a 2 minute job.

Scary thread about water resistance. The last thing we need now is someone claiming the same problem with a 3000m diver. Hopefully this short of issue is scarce.

I didn't have a problem with them not conducting a pressure test on the watch. From what I recall from the phone conversation, they won't pressure test a watch with water already in it as it may make it worse - I.e. it comes with some risk to the watch. I accept that and have been assured that the watch will be fully pressure- tested following the service. Cheers SJ
