obviously i was not speaking about you but in general... to a guy that use only balls..

I'd never use the "ball technique" on a nice watch. Too much risk. I have no business opening the back of a watch that costs more than 100 bucks.

i agree!

I partly agree with you guys. I wouldn't either open a mechanical watch because there isn't anything i can do with it. BUT, my watch is a quartz and even a monkey could change the battery if there is a case opener availible. As said before i don't have warranty on it. I would also NEVER take a bath or swim with expensive watch like this. I don't want to risk it. There are people that destroyed their watches with water even thoug it has been pressure tested.
So because of these reasons i see no meaning of paying hilarious money for a battery change.

It's a shame that people belive that it's something magic with opening a watch but there isn't.

this depends on which movement there is inside a watch... it could be very, very magical... ;)

I've been doing this a while and I use the most efficient tool for the case at hand. I'm probably the source of the "carpet tape" trick. I have used it for years on old scew on case backs of pocket watches. There is no way to use a regular case tool, wrench, etc. because the case back is smooth. I find the tape less apt to dent the case back than the rubber ball. The ball, however, works well on smaller cases that are less prone to being dented by the pressure.

On modern cases, I use the tool designed for the case. As far as opening the case of a quartz watch to replace the battery, I can only say do it in a dust free environment and use plastic tweezers to hold the battery. If you use your fingers. the fingerprint residue will eventually corrode the contacts because of the salt content. Remember, quartz watch movments have wheels too and the more expensive ones are jeweled. A little bit of dust can wreck a quartz movenment just as easily as a mechanical one.
