I once felt for Favre. He was a great QB but should really have ended his career when he left the Packers (if maybe not even a year earlier). The return to Jets seemed mostly greedy and now with the Vikings, revenge is just shining through. I wished it wouldn't be, but I think he did severe damage to his chances of a HOF with his Jets season and by signing to Vikings I think whatever chance was still left is now gone. Too bad.

Aleister: I think you a bit off here. While I COMPLETELY agree that he should have retired a Packer, he has not, and really cannot, hurt his chances to get in the Hall. He will be in his first year of eligibility. Easy. His career accomplishments are nearly without pair, and certainly his only peers are all in the Hall. As far as sticking around too long: Montana, Unitas, Marino, all played a few years past their best retirement opportunity and are still enshrined -- rightfully so. When you have been a Football player -- and really nothing else-- since you were 8 years old it is a hard drug to do without, I would bet. He is in, no trouble, first year.

PS: I am a Steeler fan, so I have absolutely no personal interest in this whole thing at all.

BoneDoc - You're probably right about the HOF. Still, I think swapping teams at this moment damages his reputation and isn't HOF based on votes?

It is, and you are likely right about it damaging his rep. It is kind of the equivalent to saying that a birth mark on her chin damages the appeal of Jessica Alba. While perhaps true, she has sooooo much appeal to bank on that it makes no real difference. Pic for reference

BoneDoc, I don't think that's a fair comparison. Add to the birthmark a few years of public bitching about her contracts and a lifestyle closer to Amy Winehouse. Then we're talking... ;)

I have no problem with someone playing past their prime (and understand why they might do it), and this latest stunt won't hurt his HOF chances.

BUT. Like an awful lot of fans out there, I am sick of the Favre Circus.

I first lost a lot of respect for him when after retiring from the Pack and the team moved on with Brooks, he flip-flopped and decided he wanted back. I was relieved that the Pack didn't give in, and told him that the starting QB spot wouldn't be waiting for him and that he would have to compete for it. What does he do? He walks away like a spoiled brat. Instead of "man-ing up," swalling his pride, realizing that he put himself and the team in that position and going out and competing against Brooks, he walks away and takes his circus to the Jets.

His one year with the Jets was, by most accounts, a disaster. And then he retires. For good this time.

And then the circus starts again. Stories come out that the Vikings are talking to him. He says he would remain retired. Then he wasn't sure. Then he was staying retired. Then he said he would let the Vikings know by July 30. Then he decided he'd stay retired. Then out of the blue on Tuesday, he flies to Minnesota and signs a deal. And brings with him the Favre Circus.

The team is trying to gel together and get ready for the season. How is this not a huge distraction at this point? Fran Tarkenton said it best:

"We have responsibilities we're just not athletes that are in it all for ourself. Football - is it not a team game? Isn't it all about team? And here comes Brett Favre riding in on his white horse - doesn't go to training camp, doesn't come to offseason workouts. And he's gonna come on his white horse and bond with all these players?"

Some people are willing to look past the Circus, and solely consider what Favre will do for the Vikings. I'm not sold there either. A lot of folks are arguing that the Vikings are no worse with Favre at QB than they would have been with Rosenfels or Jackson at QB. Really? The Vikings were going to be a running team with a great D, and a young and coachable QB that all the QB had to do was not make huge mistakes. Who in their right mind actually thinks that Favre is going to be able to accept that conservative role?? No way in hell. He'll to get out there and show everyone that he's Brett Favre and want to sling it around more than they need to, and continue to throw costly INT's just like he's always done.

In the end, the only positive thing that will come out of this is that for every 1 great play that he makes this season, we'll get to laugh at the 2 complete bonehead plays that he makes.

It's appropriate that the Vikings play in a dome - it's just like a big-top circus tent.

Good luck Vikings.
