Well, this is a Breitling forum so don't expect too many pro-Rolex answers here. Opposite goes if you asked that question in a Rolex-forum. :)

Personally, I think Rolex make very good watches, but that they are overpriced. Too much is paid for the image. Can't do anything else than congratulate the PR department at Rolex though.

I agree with aleister in that while Rolex makes a great watch, it is also overpriced IMO. I feal with Breitling, you get the best bang for your buck without sacrificing superior craftsmanship. While Breitlings are in no way "cheap" they offer a lot of watch for the $.

They are both fine time pieces..

If you look at them from a quality standpoint they are both fantastic. Aesthetically Rolex has progressed at a snails pace compared to Breitling.

There are some very nice rolex models:

I am a sucker for a cool tank watch...

The one thing you can't take away from Rolex is the fact that there watches hold there value fairly well. Breitling in general seems to depreciate a bit more.

All that being said I have 1 Rolex and many (too many) B's... I find them to be much more modern..

I'm fairly new to many brands just having taken more of an interest in watches, and wasn't even familiar with Breitling a few months ago. I did a lot of looking and even though there are a ton of nice watches out there B is my first choice. I'll never be hardcore like some on here, but am pretty sure I'll own at least three before I'm done. Probably 2 by next Summer. I'll probably own several more brands of watches as well but have no idea what they will be. If money was no issue I think about a dozen Bs would cover my want list.

It's a bit of a drag here because even with a pocket full of cash you can't buy a Breitling, Rolex, or even a Tag in my area. I don't care to travel to buy a watch so really have to rely on the good shots off the forum. Every store here has all the same stuff... Bulova, Citizen, Movado, and probably 4 or 5 more brands in the same price line. I bet there's not even a watch in town priced at over $2,500! :D There's obviously a reason they carry what they do so I don't expect too many people approaching me and saying.. "Nice Blackbird!" :lingsrock: But that's not a bad thing, I prefer having something no one else does.

Totally agree with the previous posters who said that the price is for the name... Very nice watches, but not enough to warrant the huge increase in price that you would have to pay. I also don't see too many Rolexes that I like, I find them a little 'bland' (for want of a better word) which is maybe due to my age (28), whereas I find many Breitlings and Omegas that I find attractive.

It is also nice to have a watch that is 'different'. Everyone has heard of Rolex, but how many have heard, or know anything of Breitling? There is such a story there, which seems a shame that the knowledge from the general public is so limited, but as I said, I like to have something a little more unusual.

Just my pennies worth.

My extremely biast view is.... Breitling (suprised? ).

As much as I can appreciate the quality of Rolex's I prefer the design styles, model range and all things associated with the Breitling brand.

Hi All !

I fully agree with Aleister when he stated that the Rolex watches are overpriced and that too much money is going to image and yes the PR department at Rolex should be congratulated. In a time when Swiss Watch Industry is finding difficult to sell their watches due to the global economic crisis Rolex watches are still desirable, in my opinion largely due to image and investment. Let’s be honest you can own a dozen Breitlings but none of them is a Rolex – unfortunately it’s that simple.

Now as far as quality and craftsmanship - I feel that Breitling beats Rolex hands down ! It has been my experience as well as a few other watch people that I either know or have known and they will state as I that a Rolex does not keep accurate time. In addition I feel that for the most part Rolex has an antiquated look - it has not kept up with the times - no pun intended we can even say it is somewhat passé. In spite of the way I feel about Rolex - I would love to own a Daytona in Stainless Steel with the El Primero movement. I really would however, I don't think that they are worth the money - I can think of at least half-dozen timepieces that are better quality for roughly the same price. Also keep in mind that every Breitling is COSC certified just like a Rolex, I think that the only other brand to do so is Omega. As a result Breitling has taken away some of Rolex's market shares especially with the younger demographics.

Now a Rolex Sea Dweller cost at full MSRP a little over $9,000.00 - and can go nearly 13,000 feet underwater; a Breitling Avenger Seawolf cost at full MRSP $3,660 and can go 10,000 feet underwater - like you are ever going to go down so deep in the ocean what do you think is the better value and both are COSC certified?????

Also the Daytona which is a chronograph cost almost $10,000.00 in stainless steel if you can find it, you can get any Breitling in stainless steel chronograph either Navitimer or Windrider Series and have money left over and again all Breitling watches are COSC certified like Rolex.

Well thats just my thoughts - sorry if I rambled on!

Best Regards,

Enezdez

It's an old argument this, and at the end of the day it will always simply boil down to what you like more. Plain and simple.

All I'd suggest is make sure you do enough research into all the options so you know exactly what it is you're buying into with either brand. For example, are in-house movements more important to you? Is value for money more important? Is the brand name/image more important? etc.

The more research you do, the more information you have and the better your decision making will be. (As an aside, I'm always amazed when people drop several thousand pounds/dollars on an automatic watch, only to then ask a question like why does it stop when they don't wear it. )

In terms of whether Rolex (or any other brand for that matter) is "overpriced" depends entirely on your own point of view, and your own perception of value. We all know (or at least we all SHOULD know) that every single prestige watch ever made is priced at a level that is many MANY times greater than the materials and labour costs. How else can AD's (well, US AD's anyway) just slash the price by 30% at the drop of hat for every single person who walks through the door and asks for a discount? Rest assured, even by doing that they are still turning a very healthy profit. The key is to know and accept this fact, and then you can decide if you want to buy into it. Ultimately if you want the Rolex crown on the dial, you will almost ALWAYS pay more than you would for a Breitling. Whether you are actually getting anything more for your money is entirely dependent on what's important to you.

Yes the Rolex SDDS may be almost 3 times the cost of the Seawolf.......... but the Seawolf doesn't have the Rolex crown on the dial, and if that is important to you, then nothing else will matter. For a lot of people who are really into watches, it quickly becomes less about getting value for money, and more about getting the piece you want. For example, I really want a Panerai 270. That will cost me £10,000 GBP. For the same cash I could by 2 or 3 (or maybe even 4) Breitlings...... but none of them will be a Panerai 270

Anyway, I'm rambling on! Long and short of it : research into the options, and then only you can decide if one is "better" or not.

As the old great Chicago Cub player Ernie Banks once said -

"It's a great day for a ballgame, let's play two".

Get both, or if you can't, just pick the one you like best, they're both fine watch brands.

Agree that Rolex at retail is less bang for the buck, and they aren't discounted much if any, depending on model, whereas with Breitling, if you shop around judiciously you can get great deals on most models.

I have two Breitlings (purchased one used, one new) and one Rolex (thru trade of another famous name watch).

I do not hide the fact that I have switched to the dark side of Rolex. I am SMITTEN with them, that said I always get a bargain so do not mind.

I am way past this whole watch brand discussion. I will always have a soft spot for Breitling because it is how I started this watch obsession, and I'm not a big fan of current Rolex designs - which means that I'm not a big fan of Rolex designs for the past 40 years or so given the rate of change.

However, when I am looking for watches these days I am looking at the whole package of look, quality, movement, etc and whether the price that I have to pay is presenting good value in my mind. The name is completely irrelevant to me now and while I will reject a brand if I don't feel that the quality is good enough I will never reject a luxury brand based on name alone.

Aesthetically, Breitling are far superior than Rolex. Especially the bracelets :lingsrock:
