Hey guys...i realize this is a Breitling forum, so most people here, like myself are Breitling fans...however, a friend of mine is concidering an Omega Seamaster, their new co-axil movement (non chrono)...what's your take on omega? I know they were bought out by Swatch a few years back and many places where I live no longer carry Omega. I don't even know if there is an Omega forum so I thought I would just see what you guys thought. thanks

I have my Seamaster for almost 10 years now and its still running will within certification specs like the day I got it. I find the seamaster to be extremely versatile and comfortable on the wrist.

The SMP is a classic just like the Navitimer or the Submariner. I can never decide if I prefer the 2531.80.00 or the 2254.50.00. I used to have a 2531.80.00, traded it for a 2254.50.00 then sold it because I preferred my Sub! I'll probably end up buying another 2531.80.00.

I don't get too excited about Omega/Swatch's new in-house co-axial movement compared to the older cal.1120/ETA 2892. If it does the job, it's good enough for me.

Your friend can't go wrong with a Seamaster Pro. But make sure he/she tries the Steelfish or even the Super Avenger before making up they're mind!

I have a Speedy and a PO Chrono, and my experience puts my Omegas in the same league as my Breitlings. I like the styling of Breitling better, but from a quality and fit/finish, Omega makes great watches IMHO.

Im wearing my Seamaster (Sword Hands) right now. After correcting some initial problems it has been very reliable and its hard to beat Omega lume. Just got back from ordering a rubber strap for it at the AD. I think he may be better off with an older Seamaster as Omega's new pricing is making them less and less of a bargain as they head more and more into a status symbol battle with Rolex. Just my two cents.

I'm not sure I agree that they are anywhere close to rolex in terms of status symbol. I'd put Omega in Breitlings category, one step down from Rolex.

Agreed. I have a Speedmaster SE for the moment and have had a fair share of Seamasters and Speedmasters (in various types) before. There are some quite big Omega forums to find, just google. :) Your friend can't go wrong with his choice, but as mentioned make sure he tries something else too before making up his mind.

I agree completely, they arent on same level at all. I meant that they are beginning to price themselves closer to Rolex and to be more exclusive. They arent the value they used to be.

I'm a big Omega fan, as many of you know. There's something about the design and the finish that really does it for me. I won't say what I think of Omega relative to Breitling lest it get me into trouble on this forum.

The co-axial non-chrono movement in my PO is great. It is by far the easiest and smoothest winding movement in any of my watches, in fact it is a pleasure to wind it, and I've been very happy with the accuracy. Having said that, like Sharky, I think the non-co-axial movement is great too. Models such as the 2254.50.00 are definite classics and there will always be a market for them second-hand.

bnewbie - agree completely, that white Speedy looks fantastic.

encouraging to hear you have had great luck with omega's...do you prefer the seamaster co-axial non chrono or the speedmaster manual moon watch...with the manual wind and hazilite (spelling?) crystal does it make a good "everyday" watch..thanks

Before I got my Speedmaster, I would have said I preferred the Seamaster (mine is a non-co-axial chrono), but I think that has changed now. I have become surprisingly attached the Speedmaster and I'm finding that I wear it a lot.

My Speedy is the manual wind, hesalite version, and it's a great everyday watch. You have to be a bit careful with the hesalite, but at least you can polish it if you scratch it. I might have chosen the sapphire sandwich model instead, but it wasn't an option at the time and I'm happy with the hesalite.

Incidentally, I measured the Speedy's accuracy over 24 hours a couple of times, and it returned +0 (or -0 if you prefer). Might have to try a longer trial, if I can remember to keep it wound. :)

Mine too. I have the hesalite front, sapphire back 3572.50 and it has been +0 every time I timed it. AND it is 11 years old with no history of ever being serviced. I think if you held a Hesalite and a sapphire side by side, you would choose your hesalite. It has a sort of built in anti-reflective property, and seems clearer without all the reflections you get from un coated sapphire.
