OK, so here I am trying to sort out the shipping of my Le Mans to El Rey. And it appears that UPS now WILL be able to insure the package. Great..............., you might think.

To get an idea of the cost of the various options, I use their on-line "Cost and Time in Transit" estimator on the UPS website. You fill in all the info including the customs value, the value for insurance purposes, when you want the pickup etc, etc and then it gives you the options. All fantastic so far.....

So I fill everything in - on the collection day drop-down list I select Saturday (as it's an option and all that) and obviously I'm off work so it will be nice and convenient, and for the insurance value I use the correct value..... and lo and behold it comes up with various options and the costs. Again, all great. I discuss the options with El Rey, we agree on which one to use, and off I go to complete the actual shipping order on-line.

BUT GUESS WHAT? The "Cost and Time in Transit" estimator is actually a totally crock and bears very little resemblance to the actual services on offer - most notably, there's no saturday pick-up (meaning I'm going to have to go to work late on Monday), and more irritatingly, the max insurance value I can enter is the apparently totally random value of £3015 GBP........ which is considerably less than the value of the watch, and I wouldn't blame El Rey at all if he decided against it. So I'm still no nearer to sending it.

WHY, OH WHY do they have an estimator that doesn't mirror their actual services?????? It's a total joke.

Because if they did, it just might affect how many people shipped with them?

UPS are probably no worse than the other major shippers.

And anyone is better than ParcelFarce!

Sorry to hear about that. Seems being a nightmare shipping something from your island. My island is better, absolutely everything is possible with Japan Mail. Sent a small package today (Saturday) and I could have insured it for $200k if I had felt for it (paying $1000 for the insurance) with guaranteed delivery 2 days later. You really should send the "Royal Mail" on a watch-and-learn-visit... Hope you'll find an alternative soon!

Wait until you tell them it's a watch

Best way I found was to take the strap off and box it up and send it through RMSD with the max compensation of £2500, Then do the same with the case, then celotape the packages together, this way if one goes missing they both do and you can claim 5k. It cost me just over £20 but they both arrived safely.

I use Fed-Ex to ship Robotic Total Stations and insure them for 30k..adds about $70 to the shipping cost and Saturday delivery is an option. Just a thought...

The benefits of living in the States, I afraid.

Unfortunately the UK is still a land where the woolly mammoth still roams free when it comes to courier services - i.e. it's prehistoric!! Apparently (according to the cover provided by our postal services at least) NO-ONE ever wants to post anything more expensive than £500 GBP. It's pathetic really.

I've actually finally managed to dispatch the Le Mans via another provider, but the insurance (which still doesn't fully cover it) cost an extra £60 GBP. Whereas you, UA_Plumber, can get $30K worth of cover for just $70 extra. Amazing. It just highlights what a s***-hole the UK really is.
