Prompted by Driver8's post I got to thinking........

What's your ultimate grail watch?

I could easily come up with a few million dollar watches, and then this becomes pointless, so let's put a limit on it of $150,000.

Here's mine (and the reason I didn't cap at $100K)

A. Lange & Sohne Datograph Perpetual is definately my grail watch. If i hit the lotto i will most definately be looking at this beauty. I've been in love since I first saw a picture in a magazine a couple years ago. I would love to see one in person, since that is the closest I'll ever get to owning one, with that $142k USD price tag. :wowzers

:nono:

List price is $286K - that's bending the $150K limit slightly.

But it is a very nice watch

Ugh.
Didn't know that. I don't even look at the prices of watches which are more expensive than my apartment.

Jeez you guys have expensive taste!

I actually really find it hard to relate to watches this expensive. To me even a grail watch should have a slight chance of actual ownership. I know this is a purely hypothetical exercise (well, it is for 99.99% of us!), but I actually really struggle with super expensive pieces primarily because of the fact that they all use precious metals in the case and non-steel (or non-ceramic) watches bother me. I can't stand scratches and other damage, so that's why I like watches to be non-precious. (Yeah, I know I'm weird! ) Sooooo, my grail watch honestly is the IWC Perpetual Big Pilot on my other thread for £20K!

However, in the interest of this thread I would choose the "Blancpain Quattro" from 2001, as I'm a huge fan of complicated movements - an amazing timepiece housing a tourbillon, perpetual calendar, flyback chronograph, and split-seconds chronograph, and all for US $150,000 -

http://robertmaron.com/product.php?prod ... t=0&page=1

However, if we REALLY blow the budget (sorry Roff!), then my first choice is 271000 EUROS costing "Lange 31", simply because the technical expertise of the movement is simply incredible.

http://www.thewatchquote.com/Lange-Sohn ... o_6041.htm

Failing that, I'd have to go for the "Blancpain 1735", which is one of the most complicated wristwatches in the world, and is produced at a staggering rate of one PER YEAR! It's a mindblowing work of art (combining a tourbillon, minute repeater, perpetual calendar and rattrapante chronograph in one watch  ) and every one is made in it's entirety by just one watch-maker...... who then personally hand delivers it to the purchaser's door anywhere in the world! So cool....... but then you'd hope so for the princely sum of USD $839,000 -

My other, before Roff swipes it  : IWC Grande Complications. Perpetual Calender with a minute repeater (I have been fascinated by minute repeaters since I discovered what one was). Stretches the limits of Roff's $150K limit, but maybe in a fire sale?

An IWC perpetual minute repeater under $150k!!!!!

That's some fire sale.

I guess I knew that you would all have problems with the dollar limit, but no one will ever steal my ultimate 'no budget' watch - largely because I'm the only person who ever talks to it.......

Price depends on whether you can find one. Last one that I heard of changing hands was north of $1 million. Personally, I think it would be more these days.

I just saw one on the interwebs for £1.5 million. I can't afford that.
