I'll start:

GOOD: Leonardo DiCaprio wearing the SA in Blood Diamond. Looked cool as hell, watch was in its element.
BAD: John Travolta. Good actor. Keen pilot. Scientologist. Shame.

Leo wore a Chrono Avenger in Blood Diamond... did look good though didn't it.

I like seeing watches in there element too, like Bear Grylls with his Yellow (or Coral or Black) Emergency.

It did look good. It probably played a part in turning me on to Breitling, now that I consider it.

Bear Grylls, Born Whatever.

His watches might be fake as well.

I avoid thinking of the "Breitling Ambassadors".

I always respected the fact that unlike Rolex, Omega, Tag etc. that Breitling avoided personal endorsements - I guess Travolta is an exception because he has had Navis for a long time, so there is a bit more credibility. But as has been pointed out, he's a scientologist - not exactly cool.

For me, it's all about the silver guilloche subdials, the geared bezel, the slashed bracelet...Breitling just has the high-end technical chrono market sorted because of design.

Well, DiCaprio is with TAG Heuer now.

Travolta is still a phantastic actor and as a pilot an ideal testimonial for Breitling.

Otherwise a very interesting testimonial is Piccard. (Orbiter) He was the first man to wear an emergency with a UTC. Had that specially made for him.

And there is another testimonial, not mentioned in this articel before: I am also wearing a Breitling..... :lingsrock:

I agree with earlier expressed sentiments. Di Caprio was awesome in Blood Diamond; the watch looked rugged and suited the movie.

Travolta is a great ambassador for the Navitimer although again, what's with the Scientology thing

In general I think it's important to have the right ambassadors if that is a marketing decision made by the company. It can lift the brand and exposue the brand to the market demographic most sought after.

Some good names on the list!

I'm not sure what anyone's religion has to do with anything regarding watches!

Honestly I'm also not sure why it's OK to unsubtly mock certain religions - I suspect if he was Muslim or Jewish it wouldn't be a topic of debate and this is a watch forum.

In terms of the ambassadors, I guess it works for the brand, but I don't buy my watches to try and associate with a certain person or lifestyle, so I really don't care. I do wonder how much cheaper my watch might be if brands didn't pay celebrities huge amounts of money to wear the watch though.

Well said, Roff!

That aside, back to Blood Diamond...I seem to recall that it was set in 1999, during the civil war?

According to B'Source, the CA was released in 2001, so "Danny Archer" might aswell have been Marty McFly!

Regarding the "Ambassadors" - "A-List" endorsements don't hold any weight with me; whether its Bear Grylls, Brad Pitt or Daniel Craig....ok, maybe Daniel Craig.

Still, I don't really want to be associated with what (or who) Brad Pitt does in his spare time!!

I have no issue at all with any "Breitling Ambassadors". John Travolta - cool guy IMO. Sure he's made a few turkeys over the years, but then what actor hasn't? And what religion he (or anyone else) is, is a total irrelevance to me. I couldn't care less.

Leo Dicaprio in Blood Diamond - enjoyed the film, the watch looked great. No worries.

Even "gangsta" rappers with their iced up Bentley Motors cause me no problems at all. All it tells me is that a lack of taste is entirely independent of wealth!

And nothing wrong with Bear Grylls at all either IMHO. OK so he used a smoke machine to make some "fumes" instead of just saying, "OK this is really dangerous because of the colourless Sulphur Dioxide here..... but you lot in TV-land can't see it, so you just need to trust me". Or supplementing some "molten lava" with a few hot coals - big deal. Of course he's going to make it a little more dramatic - it's a TV show! And is anyone really surprised that he has a TV crew with him?.... You know...., to like...., make his TV show?

As others have said, I don't buy watches to be associated with any of these so called "ambassadors", so who advertises (or just simply wears) a certain brand, makes no odds to me at all.

I dont mind them, although Travolta does look pretty dorky in some of the adverts. He is a good actor with some good movies though. I could care less about his religion. Its not any sillier than any other religion out there, imho.

Fair point Roff . Really not the time or place and totally inappropriate

The last time I checked this was a watch or more precisely a Breitling Watch/Timepiece forum. As a result, as stated by others in not so many words the world’s religions are beyond the scope of this forum. However, I will state the following that every individual has the innate right to pursue his/her happiness as they see fit as long as their pursuit does not infringe upon anyone else right to pursue their own happiness. Henceforth, the mentioning of religion which can be divisive factor at times has no place in this forum.

Furthermore, are we such a bombastic society as to purchase our timepieces because of what others wear? I for one purchase what I like within the constraints of what I can afford – and sometimes a little more than I can afford! Nonetheless, I buy what I like and I hope that you do too!!! I trust that you are not led by mass commercialism –like a sacrificial lamb!!! However, I would tend to agree that it is nice and perhaps even cool to see one’s watch worn by celebrities of varying arenas i.e. sports, political, actor, and/or royalty.

One Final note I think John Travolta has come a long way from his days in “Welcome Back Kotter” and being a sweathog known as Vincent “Vinnie” Barbarino. John Travolta has become a good actor in his own right!!! Although Travolta looks a little funny in the Breitling adds, he is wearing a Navitimer which I love. I love the Navitimer! (Personally I own two Navitimers because I like them and I enjoy wearing them and have a third on lay-away at Tourneau – lol) Bottom line just buy what you love and enjoy because you do and not because of what anyone else is wearing!

:lingsrock:

Best Regards,

Enezdez

I'm not into the ambassador thing at all. Not a fan of any brand using people/celebrities to promote products. Now, the Breitling display team or Super Connie, or the orbiter ... that's more like it! 8)

In a prefect world the watches should (and do, well, some do) speak for themselves!

Roff - I agree. As I said elsewhere (in a thread which seems to have disappeared, unsurprisingly), it's a slippery slope.

That is not the same thing as giving an opinion such as "I can't stand Di Caprio". Which is the truth, I can't even bring myself to a watch a movie when he's in it.
