I didn't really read the blog so much, but here is official info..straight from Panerai's site

1936
The first Panerai watch created for the commandos of the Italian Navy: the dial is still a standard type and the steel case has wire loop strap attachments welded to the case and a screw-down crown made by Rolex. 16-ligne Rolex hand-wound mechanical movement. The wide strap originally fitted was made of greased, hollow punched leather, which thanks to its length could be worn over a diving suit.

1938
Production of Radiomir watches begins for the Italian Navy, with a large (47 mm in diameter) cushion-shaped case, wire loop strap attachments welded to the case, screw-down crown, luminous dial easy to read under water in the dark, and a hand-wound mechanical movement supplied by Rolex. The wide strap was made of oiled and punched leather, and with its extra long length it could be worn over the diving suit.

Panerai used a Rolex movement through 50's. All it basically was is a Rolex with different name lol

great read , Gert.

interesting though how Panerai was used for the italian navy. I am of italian descent and know for a fact that the first Chronomat was made for the Frecce Tricolori/ or in conjunction with them...interesting that they didnt go with Panerai...

That was first modern Chronomat in 1984.
Production of Chronomat begun in 1942.
