Altair, it is so funny that you post this now.
I am planning on a new watch from a bonus which will be coming my way in November, I was looking around at the weekend and all the usual suspects looked good, then I got to thinking about Grand Seiko.

It really is worthwhile educating oneself to this brand. They make some of the finest watches in the world and quite frankly I think in many ways they actually surpasse by a country mile the Swiss in many respects.

A fact that may not be known is that Grand Seiko assigns one of it's master watchmakers the task to construct the entire watch by hand, they bring all the machined parts in then build it .
I know of few if any Swiss watches in the same price bracket that can claim the same!

The one that has caught my eye in the past few days is the new Hi Beat that is coming out next week, 36,000BPH and absolutely stunning build quality, all for the price of a submariner but with the quality of a high end Patek, yes, a High end Patek!

I actually love the fact that when worn most would think it was a seiko obtained from sears... Unless they looked closely!

I have seen a couple of GS's in the flesh now and quite frankly am astounded at the quality of them!

Here are a couple of links to the one I am on about, both in Japanese one a blog with pictures and the other a video of the 36000 movement in action...A thing of beauty!

I would also agree with some of the comments that Seiko is associated with entry level watches. The 1st nice watch I owned was a Seiko Quartz that I enjoyed. After viewing the YouTube link in the previous comments it makes me say what if... :o

Hee hee! I know, it is quite shocking, there is this large company, known for it's good quality entry level watches producing some of the most beautiful watches in the world and most people outside of the far east have no Idea, likewise Citizen make one of the finest best finished quartz watches in the worl, THE Citizen, accurate to around 5 seconds a year and a build quality to die for! There is a whole world out there to sate our horological fixations if we only look!
Take a look at THE citizen range.

Here is a Grand Seiko catalog, it is in Japanese though, the high beat is on the cover!

Wow! That Credor. The whole thing is a marvel, and to top it off, the gorgeous blue hands. If nothing else, I would like to own it just so I could sit with my morning coffee and be mezmerized by it! The smoothness of that Spring Drive never ceases to amaze me as well!
Whether I'm having a cocktail, or coffee, or whatever, I love to sit and admire the nice watch on my wrist! That is, of course, if I am alone
Great post!
Cheers,
Carl
