All I can say is that it was always a way to be like " I bet you couldnt stand this why dont you climb in and see" (Always to the women of the soccer, basketball teams etc! It worked a few dozen times! Until my coach caught me once and I ran for it..oh boy did i run for it

I absolutely have to have either a bezel or a chronograph! A watch without either just bugs me when a situation arises where I'd like to measure the time of some event.

Same here, however for me, it's usually sufficient to use a turning bezel. I don't have to measure seconds, for minutes the bezel is perfect. And if I have to measure a time span that is longer than one hour, I use the bezel for the hour markers. The maximum deviation will be 3 minutes, that's 5% of one hour and 2.5% within 2 hours, so enough precision for me if the duration is more than 1 hour. In a nutshell: I prefer the turning bezel to the chrono function.

I use mine to time how long it will take for people to attack me on this forum!

Thinking of getting a split second chrono as it seems to be so fast!

I should say that I use mine about 2 or 3 times every month when I am flying.

Funny Archie :D

I use mine a couple of times a week for activities such as timing the wait for take-out, break time between various activities etc. It's certainly useful.

I personally love the chronograph function on a watch, makes the watch more classy IMHO - not sure I'll go without it in future watches either

I use mine all the time, for all sorts of things (some useful, some quite silly). I find that I use it to time certain things, simply because I can.

I do have a couple of questions though.

Does the use of the chronograph cause a watch to "wind down" faster? So for example, if you wind a watch that has a 42 hour reserve, then turn on the chronograph and leave it running, will that watch now only go for 21 hours (for example)?

There have been several other threads that have talked about how sitting dormant in a case for a couple of years can have a negative affect a mechanical watch. Similarly, if you never use the chronograph function, does it have the same negative affect?

Bump for the questions. Anyone have any thoughts?

Use of a chronograph will reduce the power reserve, but only very marginally. I think Driver8 tested it last year, but don't recall what he found. The increased energy required to keep more wheels moving is responsible, but in a well serviced watch the impact is not significant.

If you don't run a chronograph then it will cause the oils on those wheels to break down over time - I always make sure that I run a chrono for about 24 hours a month or so at the least.

I found my old thread where I did that test, but it contained some very poor maths on my part (amusing considering I work in finance!  ) so I'm not going to post the link! BUT, the results suggested 42 hours with the chrono running, and around 44 hours with the chrono off, although bizarrely, my SA ran for 48 hours with the chronograph running! (And no, that's not down to my poor mathematics either!)

I've never considered this before but it does make sense. I always try to wind all my watches at least once a month but have completely neglected the chronograph. Duh!
Great tip Roff.
Thanks.
