I have a growing intrest in IWC, specifically the portuguese. What I would like to know is: do they use in-house movements.

Thanks,
NaviNut

If you're after a Portuguese, the Auto is an in-house movement but the Chrono is not.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Does anyone have a good picture of a Portuguese? Feel free to move this to the gallery section if you feel it needs to be moved.

The Ingenieur also has an in-house movement with an auto winding system that is more efficient than the standard design, but only in the regular and not the chrono (this is why the chrono is the same price as the non-chrono). Also their pilot's watches are awesome...they have a lot of history with aviation timepieces...but all except the Big Pilot have ETA-based movements.

Anything with the word "Big" in front of it (Big Pilot, Big Ingenieur) as well as the Portuguese Automatic have their in-house 51xxx series movements, which are very highly regarded, as well as beautiful to look at if the piece has an exhibition back.

Altair has posted pictures of his Big Ingenieur on this site, so just do a search and you will find them (they are absolutely fantastic). For other pics, the best place to go is the IWC forum on timezone...people are always posting great photos of their IWCs there.

It's the chrono that isn't in house. There aren't any (major) 3rd party movement manufacturers supplying 7 day power reserve movements.

Yes as RJ and Roff have said, this one is an in house movement. It's bascially the same as the movement as in both the Big Pilot and the Big Ingeniuer, just with a small seconds at 9 instead of the central seconds. It gives the dial that classic twin-register Portuguese "look".
