Is the dial porcelain, and if so, are the dials of most pocket watches from that period made of porcelain?

It is some kind of porcelain and most of the vintage pocket watches dials were made of it.
I'm sure that Roff will tell you more on the subject.

Two main types - porcelain or enamel. These were considered to be the most permanent choices at the time and used well known processes, tools and skills.

The downside is the relative fragility, but given that watches weren't the 'wear all the time' items that they are today that was considered acceptable.
