I know there's a bit of jesting that goes on about seeing other's collections, but for the most part I've always thought it was just that - jesting. That and a genuine interest to see some nice watches. However, I guess there is a little more spite behind some people's questioning, which I personally find pretty disgusting.

I also think it's an absolute disgrace if you (Roff) are getting PM's from people saying, "I don't know why you bothered" and "nobody is interested". Rest assured, these people are clearly in the minority here and certainly don't deserve your time, or anyone elses for that matter.

At the end of the day, none of us HAVE to be here, so what we choose to reveal or not reveal about ourselves is entirely up to the individual. Generally the membership of this place has always been respectful towards one another (with the odd bit of good-humoured banter thrown in now and then too!), and I certainly feel that is one of the main attractions........ and long may it continue in that fashion - a place where people's view (while not always agreed with) will be respected ; a place for true watch fans ; and a place for gentlemen (and gentle-women too!).

Roff, I don't think there's anything remotely selfish about what you wrote. The advent of the internet doesn't mean that people are obliged to share information about themselves on the net, even if they use it and participate in forums like this one. Personally I can't understand why people would want to post everything about themselves on social networking sites for the whole world to look at. Anyhow, I think you're not only entitled to privacy generally, you're entitled to be selective about what you keep private.

I can't believe there are actually people here who take the time to send you PMs saying no-one's interested etc. One sees that sort of behaviour elsewhere but I hadn't suspected it was going on here.

Good Professor (A title I mean with all sincerity):
If you perceived any of my words as an unwelcome intrusion, I offer you this public apology. I find your contributions to this forum in general, and to my watch knowledge in particular, extremely valuable, informative and largely unparalleled. I have no concept of the insumountable ignorance of those who besmirch your contributions to the general knowledge, but the mere existence of these ignorami lessens us all.
As to your selection of privacy matters, I personally find them just that, your selection. You owe no one anything, and all who desire information about you should be thankful for what you choose to reveal. That being said, for my part (and I can only speak for myself) my interest in your collection is truly one of a watch nut who realizes I will never have the breadth and depth that your collection does and want to have a bit of vicarious joy by knowing more about it. You choose watches (I infer) for very specific appealing factors, some of which I also find appealing. If I were to learn more of your collection I would use that knowledge (after a few well guided questions I am sure) to further advance my knowledge, understanding and joy of watches. Your discussions on both your Complications 19 and Lemans have opened my watch eyes to whole new facets I had never considered before then.
Now then, I say the last not to impugn you to reveal more, but rather to suggest another explaination (a much less creepy and bizzarre one I hope) to the question as to why some seem to be so curious about your collection. I apologize to all for the extreme length of this post. I felt I needed to say it. I will now return to creating weird compound words for bad fakes and inserting vomitus emoticons at every opportunity. Thank you for the time.
AKA BoneDoc

Thanks for the comments guys - I really do appreciate it. I worte this last evening when a combination of factors were frustrating me, you don't have to look too far to see some of them, but I was also getting PMs and e-mails from people that have had little or no communication with me wanting to know what I had bought ' you don't have to tell everyone, but what did you get' type comments.

I slept on it, but chose to post it anyway, just to try and explain why I don't post everything. I didn't intend it to be a comment on anyone in particular - except perhaps at anyone who claims to know what I bought.

My piece is en route to me, it may not arrive until next week which will mean that it will be the weekend after that before I can take photos, but I'll probably let you guys see it just because it is an opportunity to share something that, if not unique, is certainly unusual.

I do teach smoetimes, and I get a kick out of passing on knowledge, BoneDoc's comments remind me that I can do that in some small way and if that increases just one person's understanding and appreciation for these mechanical marvels, then it's worth it.

Thanks for putting up with this moribund version of me :!:

I really dont have much to add besides..I think that this time when you got on the forum and said I bought a watch and I may show you guys maybe some people took it as you being like mayyybbbee i will show you if you behave type of thing when in actuality i believe you meant it like i may be a little more bold and show you this time because you guys have made me feel comfortable enough to show this one. Does that make any sense? Roff its your decision! Dont let people get under your skin

Roff, I am more than happy with the "bit" of you that you give to this forum, the rest of you is your business and good luck to you, everyone deserves their privacy. This is after all a place for you to come and have a good time as well!!

I very much appreciate your threads on watchmaking and hope you continue, I have learned much from the knowledge you have been kind enough to share here.

Keep up the good work and whatever you got I hope it brings you a lot of pleasure

I think this forum has created a community of somewhat friends in the common bond that is our love of not just Breitling but all deserving luxury watch brands. I for one appreciate your posts Roff that give me a chance to learn more about this crazy watch addiction I have. I also enjoy seeing multiple pictures of all watches from all the members and then determining whether or not the watch does anything for me or maybe it opens up a new door to something I would not have ordinarily made an effort to discover. I would take it as a compliment that others are interested in certain pieces that you might have. I say show them all or show a few of them once a year. It's up to you, but you know we love pictures of watches and who's got what, it's only natural to be interested in that type of thing being a "WIS". I appreciate your efforts as moderator on this forum, but let’s not forget to all not take ourselves to seriously and always keep things light and learning about our favorite timepieces. I am curious what my collection will look like ten years from now and I am sure whatever direction I choose to go with it will have had some influence from the good members and Moderators of Breitling Source. Take care everyone.

I largely agree with the view expressed above. It's very strange (and slighty disturbing I must say) that you have received this much attention about your recent acquisition. Demonstrates the depth of your influence I guess. Even more odd that people are PM'ing you to question why you bother and express that no one cares about your educational posts. You only have to read the number of appreciative responses after each educational experience to understand how many people appreciate the effort and knowledge expressed. Mind you it's not surprising that your posts don't touch everyone the same way (everyone is different afterall) but it's a definitely a shame that by expressing their point of view they have had this effect. Banish them from your consciousness!!!

I for one value very highly your educational pieces and general forum presence. It enhances the already fantatsic experience this forum provides. It goes without saying that it is up to you as to what information you choose to express. I'm happy with whatever that will be (natural really  ) You are afterall one of the least selfish people here!

You'll obviously learn (and have learnt a lot) from this experience (both positive and negative) and I for one hope it doesn't diminish your presence or interest in the forums.

Once again congratulations on the new acquisition! Enjoy :D

I guess I am the only one who is not surprised then, I would have predicted this kind of reaction based on your very informed postings Roff.

Lets face it, whenever someone reaches celebrity status, whether that be a famous actor in hollywood, politicians in goverment, or Roff in these fora, it is expected that that person will be subjected to some unwanted attention and at least some poking around. Its human nature to want to know more about the people we like/respect, I know I wondered more than once what watches you like and own, and always valued your opinions (as personal opinions) but there is a line between that and actually harassing the person, unfortunately at least some people will cross that line. Its a fact of life, but it shouldnt affect you or your activities here Roff (at least I hope not) as with every numskull who has enough time to PM you and belittle your postings, there are more than ten of us who activily look forward to them and read them with great care.

I certinely understand your need for privacy, I wouldnt post so openly if my identity was public as yours, google can be a double edged sword, and I am cincerely sorry this got to you the way it did.

OK now let's go easy with these comments! I'm sure using the words "celebrity" and "Roff" in the same sentence should be against some sort of ruling SOMEWHERE! Anywhere??!!
