My question: Is there a single, *reliable* source for *consistent/time-keeping* replica time pieces? *EDIT* Bad question, don't answer that

If there was I'd buy replicas like I do ties and cuff-links (for primarily fashion/tie-in purposes).

I've had two replicas for convenience.. bought one in a pinch to wear w/ a tux at a dinner party, the other while on vacation when the battery in my seamaster kicked it (I swear I'll never buy another quartz for this reason, man did that suck).. Gave both replicas away days later because they didn't keep time consistently (aside from the fact they weren't "100%" water safe). *EDIT* they were both automatics

There probably is, but we do not discuss where to purchase replicas here.

As a side:

1) Aren't replica's illegal to some degree? I know that when they are sold as "replicas" the vendors are not guilty of counterfeit however doesn't printing "Rolex" infringe on a trademark in most Countries? [especially in N.A. and Europe where I.P. laws are enforced religiously]

2) If so, how on earth do they ship these products into N.A., Europe, etc (ordered off the web and presumably manufactured in China in most cases [if not all from what I've read])?

Replica are illegal to sell, at least in North America. They are not illegal to own, however. It does infringe on the trademark of the respective companies... That's the basics of the laws and about all I know.

If it's not, it damn well should be!! :x

Personally I absolutely hate the whole "replica" thing and what it stands for. In fact, lets not be calling them "replicas" ; lets call them what they are - FAKES. Plain and simple.

By all means lets educate each other about the various fakes out there to make sure we don't fall prey to the many clowns out there who sell them, but come on guys, lets not be lining these peoples pockets by buying them ourselves!

(Rant over, off my soapbox now.)

On a slight tangent,

What would the cheapest, brand name [non-replica/fake], chronograph, self-winding automatic cost.

Secondly, to factor in some standard of quality what is the most affordable chronometer these days. I've read over 1M certifications are handed out per year.. does a cheapo chronometer brand exist?

Not too many cheapo Chronometer brands... One watch I can think of that has a direct comparison of the Chronometer vs. Non-Chronometer is the Schaumburg Aquamatic.. you get the non-COSC one for $860US, and the COSC requires you to email for a price, but I've heard the selling price around $1500 or something.. and the 'retail' price on that one is around $1850. Granted there are some embellishments to the Rotor as well, but I'm assuming that some modification to the movement is required for the COSC version.

There are plenty of brand name Valjoux 7750 watches around... the movement usually costs like $250 or something from the TZ watchmaker's store i think. Zeno Watch Basel might have some affordable ones.. Eterna has some decently priced 7750's.. and Swiss Army uses them in their Auto Chronos as well.. Swiss Army's are probably some of the cheapest swiss made ones around. There are tons of China brands that make Chrono's as well using Asian 7750 copies.. same movement that's in the fakes but in their own branded watch.

to me no watch is worth thousands of dollars. It's just a matter of a value of a dollar, why waste thousands of dollars on just a watch when I can get a replica which many of you say look almost geniune and works. I can do that and still have money to spend on other things that matter.

Each to their own, but it matters to me that you think that it's OK to support an illegal business that ignores worker protection laws.

But hey as long as you save a few bucks and convince yourself that a fake Breitling is better than a real Timex, then no problem. I mean it's not like it's children in your family that are being forced to work in awful conditions to produce them right? And it's really only slightly illegal.

Yeah I know - I should take the high road!

If you want a cheapo watch which looks similar to the big brands, look at Alpha.

Probably from the same factories as the fakes but with their own label.

Mostly Rolex lookalikes but a few others as well.

This is their "Daytona" with the superb Seagull ST-19 hand wound movement. $128.

or the GMT for $53.

The only way I can justify owning a fake is if you live in
a high crime area and accept the possibility of being mugged -- or
have been mugged in the past. Then if some lowlife with a knife
or gun says "Give me that Rolex," it will be easy to part with.

On a personal note, I was mugged years ago in Toronto (of all places!) and
the punks completely overlooked the Submariner I was wearing. :D Anyway,
I dislike replicas on principle, but they do have their uses.
