Well, it's only a matter of time before I have my Breitling. I want to be ready to take good pics so if there is anyone has some advise please let me know.

I have a 10 mpx cannon with multiple setting options. Is one setting ideal? I want to practice on my Tag and Movado(after I dust it off) first.

I'm sure Roff has a thread somewere in the forums. I'll try finding it.

I think Mario did a guide a while ago so he'll no doubt chip in with his advise. Mine is

1. use a tripod and light box
2. use a slow shutter speed and high f stop
3. focus manually
4. get your white balance right
5. take lots of picture and you'll find what works best for your set up

Good luck and post your results on here

Youll quickly learn that lighting is the most important factor. If you dont have a light box, try and use natural light. The best camera in the world wont take good pics unless the lighting is good.

F stop is your Aperture. I generally always shoot in Aperture Priority mode.

I am by no means an expert but I have quickly learned how much natural light makes more difference than anything else.

These pictures are taken with a Nikon D80 with 18-55 VR lens.

As Jay says, the f-stop is the aperture (width) of lens when it takes a picture.

For a pic to have the correct exposure, it needs the right amount of light.

The aperture is how wide the lens opens.

The shutter speed is how long the lens opens.

So the same amount of light can enter the camera from
a) a short/fast shutter speed and a wide open lens eg 1/250 @ f2.8
or
b) a long/slow shutter speed and a tiny opening in the lens eg 1/4 @f22

The latter gives a greater depth of field which you need to get everything in focus. And also why you need a tripod.

This explains it more http://www.photonhead.com/beginners/shutterandaperture.php

The good thing with digital cameras is, unlike when I was learning, you can now practice for nothing :D
