Hello All,
My small humble watch collection currently has 3 classic pieces - Rolex TT DateJust, Omega Speedmaster (Man on the Moon) and of course my FAVORITE - a Breitling Navitimer.

I am wanting to add another 2 pieces to my colleciton in next 12 months......

1) is a small inheritance - I want a piece to remember my grandfather.
2) my wife wants to buy me a nice birthday present - as I have bought her many watches - she finally has a well paying job (earning more than me! - but I am a new age guy so this is NO PROBLEM to me).

My problem is this.....

Todate I have 3 cult watches..... BUT the next step may break the meaning of the collection....

If I add another Rolex - the collection just become a pointless collection.... If I add another classic I way miss out on what I really want (waterproof watch)....

WHAT I WANT TO ADD:-
1) Day Date Rolex President OR TT Blue Submariner
2) Rolex Explorer II White Dial

IF I WANTED TO KEEP THE COLLECTION A "CULT WATCH" COLLECTION I SHOULD ADD:-
1) Patek Phillipe Calatrava 3919 (Yellow Gold)
2) JLC Steel Reverso

ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE IS TO DITCH the TT Datejust and add a Steel and White gold 16234 DateJust and simply add a NO-DATE STEEL SUB, EXPLORER II WHITE DIAL..... that means my collection would be STEEL PIECES ONLY?

Do any members here have rules for your collection? I introduced the following rules -
1) No quartz (sold the 3944 Patek Quartz)
2) All swiss watches (the Lange is too expensive and Hitler used to give out that brand - I really dislike Hitler)
3) Need a long heritege (this rules out Franck Muller)

Hey Archie42,
Haven't heard from you in a while!
To answer your question: No, I don't have any hard and fast rules for my collection. One thing is, I don't like to mix silver and gold, unless it's real gold mixed with silver in a quality watch, but I cannot afford that anyway. I also like to wear rings, fairly big shiny rings, and I can't afford gold, so I go with silver. That limits my collection pretty much to stainless.
Fortunately for me, my favourite Breitlings are all within the Aeromarine line. I love the Blackbird and the Bentley 6.75, and I know that if I liked them well enough, I would add one to my collection. Of course, I would be eating beans for the next year, but that would be beside the point.
Now, back to your possibilities: Have you checked out any of the Baume & Mercier line? If I wanted a classy gold watch, that would probably be the line I would look at. I haven't checked out the website for over 6 months, but my AD sometimes has had some beautiful gold LE models in at around 10 grand. The William Baume collection is wonderful:

Anyway, that's my taste. A bit dressy for me, but if I had the bucks, I would go for one, and a great big gold ring to match as well!
As it stands, I am more than happy with my 3 models of Breitling Aeromarines.
Cheers,
Carl

You´re putting to much thought into this Archie... buy whatever you WANT.
The collection will be fine whatever you get if you get what you WANT.
Think about that for a while, then act.

What goal? Im with hnb on this one...Buy whatever you like. You can only wear one at a time, so who cares how it matches up with the other one in your collection.

Wow.. That is so complicated.. I say buy what you like. If buying watches was as stressful for me as it sounds like it is for you, I would have to stop

I just see cool stuff and I buy it. Lately, that hasn't been much though, just a whole pile of sub-$500 peices (about 10) that I plan to review and talk about. Its fun. I do whatever seems like the path to greatest enjoyment.

About two weeks ago I went to a Rolex AD and the watch that caught my eye was a TT Blue Submariner. If I were you I would get the Patek and the Rolex submariner. Hope that helps you.

JUST ADDED A NEW WATCH .... and it is QUARTZ!@!

I have posted before about wanting 4 good watches.... I already own a Breitling Navitimer, Omega Speedmaster and Rolex Two Tone DateJust with diamond dial.

ANYHOW.... I was seriously thinking of adding a President or TT Sub or Explorer II ....

BUT I ADDED A QUARTZ WATCH INSTEAD....

This is partially because I got a super deal on said watch....

A few other reasons are as follows:-
1) My inheritance that was coming.... HAS NOT ARRIVED YET! Very slack executor (not really wanting to push the matter with a family member.... so I will wait)
2) The Australian dollar is at record lows.... last year it was almost parity with the US $..... but since the GFC it is in the $0.62 - $0.67 range. This makes any US $ based purchase very expensive..... like 40% more expensive than before.....
3) I wanted to own 4 different brands... not having 2 of the same brand in my small 4 piece collection....
4) I like the idea of having the 3 different movement types covered.... Manual wind (Omega Speedie), Auto (Breitling & Rolex) and Quartz (Cartier)
5) I always like the moonphase feature.

The watch I chose is a CARTIER TWO TONE LARGE SIZE MENS SANTOS WITH MOONPHASE.
I paid AUS$2500- for the watch (about US$1605-)
Admittedly that is because quartz is very soft at the moment....

BUT - Cartier has never been a movement watch (like a Patek is bought for the beauty of the machine).... a Cartier is bought for the stunning outside design excellence.....

AT HOME WITH THE OTHERS!
