I have been into watches for a very long time. As a young child, I remember receiving a wristwatch that had a video game on it! It was really neat and I wish I could find it now.
When I was in my teens I became obsessed with Swatches. I think I had bought 5 or so of them over a several year period. I also remember getting a fancy pocket watch for a birthday.
Now as an adult I became aware of luxury watches (Rolex, didn’t know about other brands) and after my Uncle (lawyer) became decently successful, I remember that he bought himself a DateJust and I couldn’t stop staring at it. I was obsessed with the idea of getting me a Rolex. 10-15 years passed where my wife and I made just a decent living and “got by”. As I finally became financially stable and a whole lot better with my money, I started looking (daily) at Rolexes on eBay. I thought that if I could save up $1800, I could buy a used stainless JustDate. I can also remember thinking to myself that I will not ever spend over $2000 on a watch… that bordered on just silly! Now in looking some JERK, cross posted a Breitling in the Rolex category and that was it. I stopped searching for Rolex and started, exclusively, searching and looking at Breitlings. Now I was just “dreaming” because the price of the ones I was seeing was typically well above my personal limit of $2000. That limit got flushed down the toilet when I made the mistake of going to a AD and placing a Chronomat Evo on my wrist!!
I wanted… no needed a Breitling even more than air. So, I started the watch fund and any extra money I could scrape up got squirreled away. This is all I really save for now. I love all of my watches and have plenty still on the “need list”. I keep rationalizing the purchases by saying that my watches are an investment!
