Admin looked into this recently and apparently the difference in name simply depends on what model the braelet is attached too! They bracelets themselves are identical!

The difference in name is because Breitling initially brought the OC out for an Aeromarine model (the SOH) but they have since put it on the CM49 too. It would sound "wrong" to have an OCEAN Classic on an aviator's watch, so they changed the name when it's on a non-Aeromarine piece.

The CM49 is great in person, but only (IMO) with the black dial and the white dial. The bronze doesn't really work for me on this model.

As Driver8 says (plagiarising my EXTENSIVE research  ), the bracelets are the same. In terms of what to buy - if you are looking at buying one by Christmas I would say hold off on any decisions until post Basel when the new models are available.

I thought it was Admin's <ahem> extensive research, hence why I credited him in my post! Oops.

I think that same thought contributes to the amount of watches for sale in the trade section right now ;)

I beg to disagree a little bit: according to the pictures of Chronolog 09 or www.breitling.com the OC is more finely woven: contains more "lines", 14 or 15 for the 24 mm bracelet, while the AC contains I think 10. While I have no info on the clasp but I think it must be the very same, only differing maybe on surface treatment (brushed vs. polished).

Hope this helps. Regards: Robertus

Well spotted, that man!

Now I'm trying to think which looks better. I agonized between the SOHC black on mesh and the CM49 on mesh - the former won out. But I do love the retro style CM49! I guess my eyes are far too big for my wallet eh?

Oh, believe me - it's bloody gorgeous but you gotta have big meathooks to go with it!

I'd go for the SOHC: has a true integrated chrono movement the ETA 7750, while the other uses a sandwich-ETA. The only two reasons why I haven't bought the SOHC yet are its size being way too large (I'd go for a cca 40 mm one) and the missing weekday feature of some other 7750-s, e. g. my wonderful CSO.

Choose and enjoy! Regards: Robertus

Ah ha, so I guess Roff's ALLEGEDLY extensive research (that I plagiarised in my response) wasn't quite so extensive after all!

My "lesson-learnt" of the day? If you are going to plagiarise, make sure you plagiarise something accurate!

Thanks for the additional info Robertus!

They both have the same 24 mm size - the OC comes in a 20 mm size too for the SOH 38 mm. (I've purchased the 20 mm and use this for a few other watches instead: Breitling Chrono Cockpit, CSO or Sinn 103 St Sa.) I love the Breitling mesh - a double-push-button safety clasp (like that of the Ocean Racer) with extension link would make a heavy improvement - even for the Navi, the Pilot and the ProII. bracelets, which are otherwise perfect bracelets.

Regards: Robertus

PS: Driver8, you're welcome! :)

Yeah, it wasn't my hard work.. I just asked the question

Now I have another question.. what's the difference between the Aero Racer and the Ocean Racer, hmmm?
