I have my collection at a pretty good place right now, both in terms of diversity and size, but the quality is a bit lacking for my tastes so i have been spending some time contemplating how to cater to my endless horological lust while not deviating too far from the basic structure of my collection, which is tailored to my needs and likes.

So here is what is coming in and what is going out:

First off, the PAM 233 is coming in and the PAM 88 is going out. Both are GMT watches and have/will pull travel duty. Taking a PAM with you on travel is great, with all the strap options available you dont get bored plus they are diverse enough to go with anything. the 233 has an in-house manual wind movement housed in a 1950 case with that gorgeous domed sapphire. Lovely!

Secondely, the Oris LE Flighttimer is going out and an IWC Big Pilot is coming in. The Oris is great, very well made and a real solid bargain but I just dont wear it due to the Crown being a bit too sporty for my usual wear, so it just sat there since I bought it less than a year ago. The IWC BP is a gorgeous, simple piece of art that really caught my attention when i saw it in person. A must have watch for me!

Image

Finally, either my Omega railmaster or Breitling Steelfish are making way for a Jaeger Reverso GMT. I have always had a week spot for this watch, so classy and tecnically a marvel of modern engineering, the fit and finish when examined up close exceeds that of base Pateks. A real bargain. The only reason I did not bite yet was that the aforemensioned watches did fine for work, but since my recent promotion I have been wearing suits more often and the Railmaster has been pulling double duty.

There are other watches in my must have list, namely the Rolex Deepsea, AP Royal Oak Offshore Safari, and I am sure Breitling will come up with something that catches my fancy this year. But these will have to wait untill 2010.

That is quite a plan there, Altair! I've always thought you have brought in some great looking watches, and it sounds like you will be continuing to do so.

Best of luck!

Crikey Altair, I can't argue with your logic there in terms of upgrading! That's a SUPER set of incoming watches you have there! (Except I'd probably pass on the 8 Day manual-wind Pannie in favour of the 10 day auto... but then I'm a bit of a manual-wind-phobe!)

BTW I'm going to be extremely jealous of the IWC BP as it's on my hit list too, but I just can't justify the expense at the moment.

You're going to run out of pieces to buy soon!

Good work my man!

Some very nice pieces in deed. Can't argue with the brands incoming, although my model choices would be different.

Good luck, and of course keep us posted.

You mentioned something about parting with your Pam 88 to make room for the 233. When do you plan on doing this? The 88 is on my would like to have someday soon list. Send me some details if you've not already moved it along. You've got some great ideas with the direction you are heading with your collection. Congratulations on the promotion as well!

I assume you are reffering to the 270, to tell you the truth I can't imagine anyone preffering that over the 233 for the following reasons:

1- The dial on the 270 is too cluttered for what it is, both the 9 and seconds dial do not work. the 233 is perfectely balanced.

2- The manual wind movement os so much nicer to look at. Plus I enjoy winding my watches. Cant explain that last one, just enjoy interacting with the movement.

3- Price, the 233 is about 30% less, and in that price bracket that is significant money.

One can only hope my friend :(

Unfortunately I am working on a deal with a fellow for trading my 88 plus cash for his BNIB 233. if that does not pan out I will let you know.

It's a good thing they make so many models to suit all our varied tastes.

thanks and will definately keep you posted as to how my plan moves along, right now working on the JLC through a retailer and the 233 through a trade. Looks like the IWC will be a mid year project at this point.

Update on the aquisition plan:

233: Check! :D

BP: BI!!

JLC Reverso: The new Grande models release a couple months ago caught my eye, so pushed this to 2010 (next year is 2010? that just hit me!! wow)

The Breitling LE and other Breitlings are out of the picture for now, Breitling just left me cold this year

With the elimination of the Breitling pick up and JLC, I can get something else from my list.

The great thing about the timing is that watches on the second hand market are insanely low. I can either pick up an AP ROO black themes or a IWC BP AND a Bell and Ross BR01 Instrument Carbon (PVD), all of which I am craving.

Choices choices, what do you guys think?

The ROO doesn't do it for me, but I think that might be your better choice Altair. Having the BI you might want something different than the BP immediately afterwards, and while I keep coming back to the concept of a BR01 I wouldn't go for a coated one simply because it is only PVD - titanium one looks good though.

All that said, it is two watches vs. one - a nice problem to have either way and I guess the right answer is the option that the new fiancee prefers

I really do like the ROO, such a finely made watch, amazing attention to detail. And considering retail is 22K and they are currentely going for 10K due to the credit crunched buyers, its practicly now or never.

I am really craving something on a SS bracelet, so the Rolex Deepsea is up there too. Either that or the BP (yet another strap watch though)

Check out how big the Rollex wears!!

Now the PVD instrument is a necessity, I have been craving a black PAM because they look KILLER on brown and vintage straps. Take a look:

You guys kind of convinced me to leave my PAMs alone, and since OEM black Panerais are so expensive they are a non option. But I found a pic of the BR01 Carbon and it looks like it looks great with similar combinations

Deep Sea is as close as I come to liking a Rolex, but we all know I'm the wrong person to offer opinions on it.

I uderstand the appeal of the BR01, but the PVD would put me off, and while I agree with you that ROOs are a great deal right now, there are also a lot of other deals out there - just look at eBay in the $8 - $10K range and you might be surprised. To me the big discounts on AP is in large part because they are overpriced to start with.

That said, we can't all like the same thing, and it's certainly a good time to buy!

Now that sounds like man with a plan
I mentioned to my wife, that on my 40th Birthday, I'd like to acquire a Panerai. As of now, they are out of reach for me, but I figured in 3 years time, I could sock away sock Pam love money!
I look forward to seeing your collection morph and grow!
