Hi Guys
Having bought my 1st automatic watch (AS) and finding this forum i am becoming addicted.I have read on a few occasions
about auto watches becoming magnetised. Apart from the obvious i,e electromagnetic fields, TVs and HI FI speakers what are the main areas of concern regarding this? how do airport scanners and baggage X-ray machines figure as i have always just put my quartz watches through the machine??

There was a debate on this a few months ago, without any clear answer as I recall.

I never wear one through the body scanner - put it in the tray to go through the x-ray machine instead. Don't have any evidence of problems, but with stories of self scan checkouts causing problems with magnetising watches it just seems safer.

Try flying into the states from the Uk. you almost have to strip naked.
Everything has to go in a tray.

Probably right that the scanner may affect the watch. I've never had any trouble though.

I fly to the UK and back into the States once a month and never take it off - nor have I ever been made to. I really hate having to remove the shoes and belt though -- it's a pain...

Doesn't it make the walk-through machine S#$t a brick? I fly a bit (once a month or so) and even in my local airport (have to fly to Atlanta for many things and ALWAYS for international) and I always have to take off everything including my wedding ring! Once in Atlanta the damn thing still went off. The half-wit government employed H.S. dropout asked if I had any other metal on my person? I replied "Just this steel plate in my head that I got in 'Nam." (line from "Christmas Vacation" with Chevy Chase -- funny flick!). He actually started to scan my head!!!! I am 35 and look it!!! I was born in 1973!!!!! That is the same year we got out completely!!! They rarely draft newborns into the infantry .
Sorry, off topic. HO, how do you get away with wearing your watch through?

Well I had an experience with my cockpit a couple of days after I got it, I went to my local library to check a book out, I used the self serve check out and it magnetized my watch! I went back to my AD and they demagnetized it and said that they were experiencing more and more of this with self serve check outs as they contain powerful magnets! The AD said to use my other hand to pass the objects past the scanner but it put me off for life, I let the assistants do it now!

A co-worker's Blancpain was going crazy, speeding up, slowing down. It had been magnetized by being "wanded" at airport security. He bought a demagnetizer and fixed the watch, but as noted above, some jewelers have the equipment, too. I used to take my watch and ring off going through security, but no more--someone could easily grab them. No way would they expect a women (mostly) to take off some diamond ring worth $$$ and risk it being ripped off.
