When wearing an expensive suit to a swanky event my Rolex Sub bi-colour with blue dial is better looking than any Breitling in existance in my opinion.

When wearing a polo shirt and jeans, going to the beachside or to a wild party with friends, my Breitling Emergency coral + UTC is such a cool watch and get's so much (positive) attention it wins in these situations hands down.

I think it all depends on personal taste, what you wear and where you are going.

As for the other minor aspects of a watch - dial, case & bracelet - Breitling kicks Rolex into next week.

Most Rolex customers the world over, know F all about watches

The "status symbol" of having a (genuine) Rolex which cost sooo much, makes some people need to brag about it.

My late fathers Datejust is well built. Though I would still depend on a Breitling every time

Well as for the DeepSea... i have to admit, that`s a pretty well made watch, i can`t think of any breits in that price range that could rival the DS in quality to be honest.

But who cares, you wear a watch cause you like it, not because it has an inhouse movement.

I can, even in the half price cheaper range.

Why not? Its a very basic movement.

I hope not all Breitling adepts make the same generalisation. It's right there with 'most Breitling owners can't afford a Rolex', 'most IWC owners are boring', most Swatch owners are gay' and the ever popular 'most Panerai owners have at least one secret girlfriend that plays the harmonica'...although that one might be true.

Well let's hope not, but I personally agree that a lot of people who aren't "into" watches (but decide they want one expensive watch), invariable go for a Rolex just because they've heard of them and they're perceived as being the best. That's not to say they are not fine watches, but they certainly are the default prestige brand in many uninformed people's eyes. Like I said in my earlier post in this thread, if people do research and still come back to the Rolex, then that is absolutely fine, but a great many don't........ they just buy it because it has the crown on it.

Wow, that is great news, where are these overlooked treasures?

To answer the OP more directly:

Better movement? Yes!

Better Materials? Yes! Not much difference in the steel used but better? Yes.

More Value? Yes!

Is your cousin an idiot? Yes!

Worth 4 times the price of a Steelfish: NO!

:uplaugh:

You'll never know as I've seen a few very reasonably priced PAMs in Tokyo - I might have to get someone that harmonica sometime.

I have a Rolex and the only reason I keep it is that it was a gift. Probably half of the Rolexes people wear are fakes. A few friends have gotten them recently, probably as "rewards" for middle age success--like a Cadillac. I much prefer the more esoteric brands, like Panerai, IWC, Zenith, Blancpain. Breitling probably has more widespread name recognition than even those brands.

I wouldn't equate Rolexes to Mercedes. I think the major luxury German cars are all pretty good and have subtle differences in character that appeal to different people. That said, I drive a BMW 335 and my wife has a Porsche (but it's a Cayenne, although she wants a 911).
