I know there are a few Bentley Le Mans fans on this board who may be interested in knowing one is up for action at Bonhams in London today.

I think their estimate of £1,500-£2,000 looks on the low side to me, as do some of the Patek prices. Is this just a tactic to get people interested or is the credit crunch now hitting the luxury goods sector?

Well I feel somewhat qualified to comment given that I am rather familiar with recent sale prices on these pieces

If ti does sell for this price it's remarkably cheap - for a blue dial, assuming that the condition is where it appears to be then we are going to be in the GBP3,000 - 3,500 range, maybe slightly less given the 20% buyer's premium.

I wonder it it would have gone for more it it had been a Bronze/Copper colored dial...These hardly ever seem to come up for sale.
(which, incidentally, were/are numbers 1-250, I believe [I got to handle one that a youngster was wearing at the Govberg dinner this autumn, and his was in the single digits})

That's good to see - a bit of sanity returning to these pieces. No movement pic of course so you have to wonder, but looks nice - sub dial seconds may not be quite right - tough to see clearly.

Guys,

I was there in person. Will give you the full list of Breitling sales values a little later.

Guys,

here is a mini report.

First of all, the thing about the total cost... You actually pay: bid + Buyer's premium + 15% Tax on buyers premium. The website isn't showing the total cost.

The actual winning total costs for the Breitling were as follows:

LOT 157 Breitling Chrono Avenger E13360 - £1353
LOT 158 Breitling B-1 Gold K68362 - £2460
LOT 160 Breitling Bentley le Mans A22362 - £2460
LOT 202 Breitling Chronomat Gold K13047X - £2214
LOT 206 Breitling Navitimer Montbrillant H41330 - £4428
LOT 216 Breitling AVI 765 CP - £2706
LOT 217 Breitling 808 AOPA 1956 - £2091
LOT 218 Breitling Chronomatic - £1476
LOT 219 Breitling Chronomatic - £861
LOT 220 Breitling "Bullshead" - £922.5
LOT 251 Breitling Navitimer (recent) - £1722
LOT 252 Breitling Ref. 2116 Gold - £2214
LOT 267 Breitling Chrono 1940's - £861
LOT 268 Breitling Chrono Gold Black Dial 1940's - £1045.5

Things can get hectic and confusing, and you tend to lose concentration in the 3 hour bid marathon, but my understanding was that lots 217, 267,and 268 were unsold... I wanted the AOPA, and bid on it, but wasn't going to go that far. Maybe next time in March.

Interestingly, the Bentley (lot 160) almost went for £1500 (the bids are without buyers fee) and then bidding pushed up in the very last second. It sounded like some bidders who originally didn't intend to bid for it changed their mind. I was also very suprised on how popular the Montbrillant (LOT 206) was.

Concerning other brands, the trend was that expensive rare Rolex's are less wanted but Patek Philippe, Jaeger, and IWC are very popular. I was also surprised on the values of the Omega's, especially the Speedy's.

Just one final note: the serial numbers of the B-1 Gold and the Chronomat Gold don't seem to be in Breitlingsource - ?

Roff,

concerning the AOPA: the problem with these auctions is that you can't of course open the watch to see the movement. You can, though, view the watches beforehand, which is what I did last Sunday.

I looked over the AOPA thoroughly. It was in good shape, ticked niceley (better than my 1966 806) but the hands were rusty and the strap was non-original and didn't seem great quality.
