Hello,
How do you view Breitling as a brand?

Is it higher or lower than Rolex?

Personally I view the very top of the crop as:- Patek, VC, Breguet, AP
Under this is Rolex, Cartier, Breitling, JLC
Under this is Omega, Tag, chronoswiss
Under this is the entry level SWISS stuff.....

Where do you see Breitling in this?

Your analogy is very accurate in my opinion...

Id put Omega up a level, and id definitely put JLC up a level. I love my Breitlings, but they are no JLC.

In purely technical terms I see it side by side next to Rolex & Omega. Taking in considerations everything else, I see it below Rolex.

Although trying to "rank" watches is a bit moot as every single person will have their own opinions, I think this Chronocentric article really is the best I've seen.

I don't think anyone of sound mind can question the ratings laid out -

A Lange and Sohne, Alain Silberstein, Audemars Piguet, Blancpain, Breguet, Franck Muller, JLC, Parmigiani, Patek Phillipe, Ulysse Nardin, Vacheron Constantin ARE high end luxury.

Breitling, Cartier, Ebel, Omega, Rolex ARE luxury.

Baume & Mercier, Raymond Weil, Tag Heuer ARE pseudo-luxury.

Epos, Fortis, Movado, Oris ARE basic-luxury, etc

I think the rankings are spot on, especially if you read the other criteria in each section that go with it - i.e. "Design/Style", "On The Outside", "On The Inside", etc.

A really great article IMO.

Did not see Panerai in the list?

Neither are several other Richemont Group brands - Cartier, IWC, Piaget, A. Lange & Söhne and Roger Dubuis.

I remember looking at this article at least 5 years ago when I first got interested in high end watches and judging by the prices quoted, it was possibly part of the original web site launched in 1998.

Just shows what a superb job the management at Richemont have done in developing their brands over the last 10 years.

If we're talking about the Chronocentric article, I think their lists in the various sections are just examples of which brands they class together - certainly not an exhaustive list.


Cartier and A. Lange & Söhne are there......

Rolex, for some reason, has that "BOSE appeal" (perception of being the best with nothing technical to back the opinion).

That said, I wonder how/why that happened? I realize it's a timeless, fail-safe brand to wear (and has resale value exceeding brands like Breitling, despite the sheer numbers produced), but it's predictable. You want a nice watch, buy a Rollie and forget about it. Great, but sadly lacking thought or creativity.

This is part of the reason why I love Breitling, Panerai, and to some extent, Omega. There is a "culture" around the brand that is all about the pure love of the pieces. Rolex is such a safe choice that it lacks any allure IMO.

I see Rolex ahead of Omega, with some overlap and Breitling on the side, with some overlap of both
