Is purchasing a Breitling off the internet from theWatchery.com or jomashop a bad idea? What aren't you getting when you purchase from them when compared to an AD. This will be my first Breitling, so I want this experience to be a good one.

Does anyone have any good/bad examples of buying from a grey market seller?

The biggest thing that you are not getting online is a Breitling warranty. You get the dealer's warranty with no guarantees over the quality of parts being used. Depending on the seller you may also not get a serial number - a much bigger issue as Breitling will likely not touch a watch without a serial.

I've bought online from grey dealers and have had full Breitling Warranties, paperwork, fully boxed, intact serial numbers the lot. 100% new and 100% genuine.

I hear you say you want good experience, especially when it is your first Breitling, right? A word of Advice - STAY AWAY FROM GREYS!
Why you ask? Because the quality of Fakes has just got SO SO Good - It will be virtually impossible for you to make out if it is the real thing or not. And you will be left wondering for the rest of your life if your new baby on the wrist is indeed made in Switzerland or somewhere in China/ Japan.

I am just presenting 2 posts - by members in the last 10 days (and there are plenty more if you dig deep) who want external validation that their Breitling is genuine. Do you think any of them will EVER be completely assured that theirs is real?

(While the senior members here are genuine Ling Experts and their SEAL of Approval means a 99% chance this is real - but even they only have pics to work with and hence canot be 100% sure)

And have a look at some of the Fakes that are out there - Again posted within the last 2 weeks only. Dig Deep and you will find plenty of posts with fakes that look dangerously close to the real ones.

And all this for what? How much do you think you will save by going to the Grey Channel (You know there is a reason why it is called the GREY Channel!) And what you save - will it be worth the lack of peace of mind?

There is something about the assurance and confidence that buying from an AD with all paperwork gives you. The sheer pleasure of opening the packaging and the plastic protection covers from the watch - knowing that you are the first guy to own this baby - and legally - IS REALLY SOMETHING ELSE!

If anything, I went through all of this when I ventured out for my first ling. Experience recounted here...

Just talk the AD down and use the grey market price to your advantage. In these tough economic times, a dealer is more likely to bend on the price. That said, I'd avoid the grey market buy since a) you can never be sure what you get is legit; b) the AD expierence is part of the fun.

You can easily find the same prices at ADs that you will at the grey market sellers. If you need an AD, let me know.

My own recent personal experience has taught me one valuable lesson. If you want to be sure, if you want to be treated well, if you want re-assurance and peace of mind that IF there is any kind of problem it is covered by people who KNOW Breitlings. Go to an AD. If you just want to get one for cheapest price possible.... well there is that other way. I wish I had appreciated all the things that extra $$$ pays for.

No, def not a bad idea. Do some research and figure it out...i just got one from authenticwatches.com and they have been great so far.

How can it be that these dealers get authentic Breitlings without serial numbers ?? Does Breitling make watches with & without serial numbers and if so why ? I don't get this ...

They are removed by the ADs who sell them to gray market, so Breitling can't trace them.
