I have just sold my Super Avenger on Sunday evening. It is now Tuesday and the winning bidder still hasn't even contacted me. He has 100% feedback but I have sent a couple of messages just asking for him to contact me.
How long do you think is too long to wait before I move on...I ask because there is another bidder who I could offer a second chance offer to as his last bid was only $.50 less than the winner!!! :?

Thanks,
Patrick

Hmmmm, difficult one. I've had a similar thing in the past, so what I now do on my auctions is state that buyers are to contact me within 3 days of the auction close or else it will be offered to someone else as a second chance offer. Obviously that's no help to you now though! :?

I'd be tempted to send the guy one more mail and say that if he doesn't contact you within 24 hours, then you will offer to it to the next highest bidder. You can't hang on forever and if you wait too long you could lose the 2nd highest bidder if they buy elsewhere. It might also be worth contacting the 2nd highest bidder and just see if they'd still be interested. If they are I'd say just sell to them now. If the first guy can't be bothered to contact you he deserves to lose out.

Thanks for the quick response. That was thinking also. I've been kicking myself for not setting a limit for payment. Its a real pain as I need the money to buy the Emergency which I have found!!! :x

IMHO, since you did not specify a time frame for payment in the auction, I would say you are contracted to sell to the winning bidder for at least 7 days which is the minimum period eBay states must pass before an Unpaid Item dispute can be filed. I always state "payment must be received within 5 days" on my auctions to avoid this situation.

The seller has 100% feedback and has bid on 60 items, mostly watches, in the last month alone so my guess is he'll come through OK.

I'll be giving him the full 7days, its just a pity I hadn't specified a time period though. I don't want any negative feedback!! :)
I see you've been watching the auction

No, just had a look this evening to see if I could find you a loop-hole but I think the saying "patience is a virtue" is apt at the mo :P

Hope you don't lose out on the Emergency.

This kind of situation has really iritated me when it has happened to me in the past. I tend to expect others to behave I as would.

For example, if someone knows they'll be unable to contact the seller for a few days after the auction closes, then what's up with them saying that upfront BEFORE they bid?

Besides, what's the worst that'll happen on eBay if you sell to the 2nd highest bidder? You may get negative feedback from the first bloke. OK, but is that really more important than making a sale and getting your cash? Personally, hard currency would speak a heck of a lot louder than a possible negative feedback comment. (Fortunately for me none of the clowns who have messed me about in the past were competent enough to leave any feedback at all, so I'm still at 100% positive! :) )

I had something vaguely similar recently when I was trying to sell my Olympus on the Bay. A bloke said he'd pay me £2500 cash for it. I said OK and asked when he'd come to pick it up. It was a Sunday at this point, and he said he'd be in touch by Friday the following week. I was a little skeptical of him (my thinking being that if he's able to text, why not phone?), so I said I'd take it off the market just as soon as he calls me to set a date to come and pick it up. He texted me to just say, "I'll be in touch by Friday" yet again. So I agreed but I also reiterated I'd only take it off the market once he'd called to prove he was a serious buyer....... and guess what? Friday came and went and no phone call. Now there's a surprise.

Moral of the story? If you think people are messing you around, 9 times out of 10 they probably are. Serious buyers won't want to lose out.

As I say, if people can't be a*sed to get in contact within a day or so, they don't deserve to get it IMHO.

(Sorry, maybe I'm just in a bad mood as I've had a rubbish day at wortk! )

Thanks sharkmouth, I really hope I don't lose the emergency. I have been saving for ages now and with the finish line in sight i'm very anxious!!

Driver8, I totally agree, I have also had a lot of bad experiences. I've sold 4 Breitlings on ebay and only 1 has gone smoothly!
The worst question I ever recieved for a Superocean I sold was.."Hi, will you accept £250 for this watch, you know with the credit crunch at the moment!" Usually I reply with polite refusals to lowball offers but I decided to just delete that one!
Ebay can be a great site but plenty of chancers about!!!

I always make sure I cover all bases when sending messages after an auction.

Unless you're sending via eBay the emails may be going to his junk mail box - likewise with any sent to you.

You probably have this covered but just in case.

As others have said - I always state payment within 48 hrs of auction end. You can put it in your conditions which will be the same every time.

Hope it all works out - I'm sure it will.

Thanks BB! I hope so. I sent him a mail via ebay asking for his email to correspond through. I will keep you all posted and by the end of the week I'll hopefully post some pics of the new emergency!

Patrick

He did Gert, thanks for asking. He was a very nice man, had just been very busy.
If you have a look in the Gallery section, you can see my new purchase....I think you'll love it Gert!

 Oops, good thing you didn't take my advice on this one then! I guess my bad day at work on that day would've cost me a sale if I'd been in your position!

Glad it all worked out OK!

Not at all driver8, I totally agreed with you! It was typical as I gave the buyer 12hours to pay or I wold go with another buyer. I woke up the next morning to find the payment had been sent!
To say I was relieved is an understatment!! :D

Good to hear it worked out well. Can't wait to swing by the gallery and see the yellow Emergency (I presume). I've had my fair share of strange potential buyers, the most odd would be an Italian guy who wanted me to fly to Italy to deliver a watch personally. He said he'd even pay the flight. But when I asked for a deposit to cover the flight (if he was just playing) you can guess how it ended.
