When I purchased my Emergency, I signed an agreement that got sent off. I was the first owner of the watch.

I've now taken a deposit for my Emergency, and as such was expecting the new owner to sign another copy of paperwork.

However, when I phoned BUK, they said I don't need to do that as it was for the original owner only, and I just need to send them an email. Is this correct?

Never used to be the case. ADs had copies of the agreement the new owner needed to sign.

Well yes, this makes sense, as you can ID the person etc.

Else you could purchase an emergency, pretend you sold it and change the owner to an imaginary person.

It seems like Breitling would use your email information to update their database? It seems like we are becoming so dependent on doing everything electronically that used to require face to face conduct of business. I wonder where we would be if the grid ever went down?
It seems that if you follow BUKs instructions, you should be in the clear responsibility wise. Jmho.

They can't track the 121.5 transmitter to a serial number. Unlike the 406mhz where it will send details when activated. The waiver is kind of pointless imo.

I disagree. If the government spends money looking for you after the distress call, then they are likely to find you, and your watch, and the serial number.

Don't buy an Emergency unless you really need it. That watch seems to me it has the potential to become a huge and costly liability.

What I'm saying is the 121.5 transmitter doesn't have a specific identifier so if you accidentally or intentionally set it off, they don't receive any details about the owner. A 406mhz transmitter has a specific ID It transmits via satellite and when you register the 406 you will supply your contact info and emergency contact info which goes into the database. This way they know who is lost as well as a gps coordinate when the beacon is activated. So what is the point of collecting that information for a 121.5 only beacon?

121.5 and 406mhz ELT's get set off accidentally almost daily in aviation, and haven't seen anyone forced to pay for a search - So I have to argue the liability threat. Having said that I also wouldn't own an Emergency if I wasn't a pilot or didn't work remote.

ELT's go off all the time by accident. It's hardly the issue that it is purported to be.

Well, I didn't believe the lady on the phone. So I sent them an email to make sure I'd at least have it in writing.

They are sending me out a new agreement for the new owner to sign.

Moral of the story; don't trust the first person you speak to!

I see avantgardetime has posted on at least two forums re his thoughts on the subject of buying/owning an Emergency.

Don't buy something like an Emergency, unless you really need it, is like saying don't buy a fast car unless you really need it, a great pen, unless you really need it.

Chill out mate. I fly on airliners and will die if it crashes but I like my emergency being on my wrist just in case. I've owned a fast luxury car, that was hugely costly and a financial liability, my pen's ink cost more than most new other writing instruments.

But.

I bought my Emergency because it's an iconic beautiful piece of horological history.

I bought my car because I was stupid, but it was soooo pretty.

I bought my pen because it looks so very very cool, feels perfect to hold. It writes well too.

So, I suggest perhaps 80% of the Emergency watches that have been sold are because of their gadget appeal and aesthetics. The rest are working choices.

I wear mine more often than any other piece in my collection. And I never ever tire of looking at it and enjoying my ownership.

Surely this higher end watch owning hobby has to be about loving them as opposed to just buying one just to do a job or tell the time?

Back on track, I bought mine second hand, and had to sign a letter for the seller so he could inform Breitling UK. When mine went in for a repair they confirmed the ownership details had been transferred.
