Hey all!

Been gone for a while and as I come back I noticed all of a sudden all has gone black. The new LE Navi is all black, the new 1884 Navi too. And its the same over at JLC, take the Master Ultrathin Perpetual for instance, or the MUT Moonphase.

Is there a reason for that? I mean I know black watches matter,* but its a bit very dark lately, is it not?

What's your view on this?

Cheers

Fred

Black steel and DLC Carbon treated watches are in fashion and obviously there is demand for the all-black tactical look. Granted is not to everyone's taste but some watches do admittedly look better this way. Watch manufacturers are responding to this fashion trend and clearly Breitling is one of them. Their 2 main new releases at Basel World 2016 were black steel/titanium models.

Remember when Breitling was all about the all high polished mirror finishing of their stainless steel watches about 10 years ago?

They were heavily criticized for what was perceived as a gaudy blingy look. They seem to be going away from that.

I think it reflects what people are buying and meeting the demand for black watches. Most manufacturers research what their customers wa t and try to meet the need. I don't see a downside to it since there are plenty of shiny polished examples out there to buy. I recently bought a new Seawolf and I am now thinking a black steel Avenger may join the Seawolf at some point.

I completely agree with the OP on this. Black does not reveal the contours and nuances of anything, be it watches, car colors, or my biggest pet peeve, black wheels on cars.

Agreed. There is a place for it but I expect that given the ease with which titanium scratches those black watch finishes are not going to hold up as well as naked, brushed metal. Anyway as I said all this "going to black finishes" is not that appealing IMHO although it apparently sells...clearly they charge more for it. Having said that eventually I'll probably give in and buy one to see how it holds up. Tactical looking yes, classy piece of expensive jewelry, nowhere close.
