Is it yours now Kurt? Judging by the wings alone I thought the guy had made a mistake in describing it, as they are the same shape as late 50s Venus dial wings (photo attached, top Val 72, bottom '59 Venus, middle this dial). But yesterday when the seller sent me the photos of the back of his dials, it was clear by dial feet positioning that the one in question was in fact an R72 dial (or at least very different from the Venus 178) dial.

Anyways, it is very beautiful. I am not big on project watches but I have a feeling I may regret missing this one.

I dont think its a V72 dial , the logo doesnt fit , unless its one of those 806 marked V72's ? , will have to look into that

There's no reason to doubt at all.

The first AOPA logo was significantly different than the later ones (at least if you like details), it was used in 1954 & part of 1955, then the logo that is on the eBay dial came, it was used in Valjoux 72 pre 806 & 806 AOPA's, from somewhere in 1955 and until 1960 / 61, then it changes again, easiest noticed by comparing / looking at the 2 curly lines in the bottom of the logo.

Very interesting thread.
Looking at your pictures Kurt I was indeed quite surprised to see some R72 Navi with what I found to be a kind of mixed logo with a shorter central logo (the blazon bearing the AOPA wording) while still having the more curved wings typical of the R72 logo.
Now I know why! :)
