And with V72 sibling:

Seems like the sweephand repainted and perhaps the running second hand,
The rest hopefully??? Ok.

Wondering what people here think about reluming the hands or not?
Thanks for looking :lingsrock:

whoa, David !!!!
where did you find this rare gem ?
superb, my respect & congratulations.
the remaining lume on the hands should at least be fixed so it does not (continue to) fall off and potentially cause movement damage.

Too many grails in one post......congratulations.
Let me cover my eyes so I can respond ...

Ok. Really a tough call on the hands. Normally I'd say for sure to redo them ... But because this is such a rare watch in preserved condition, i say save as much as possible of what's there...

to find an untouched rare watch like this is really special... So maybe just leave for a little while before you decide. I think I would end up sealing them and leaving as is.

The other option is to seal in the hour hand and relume the other two to match as close as possible in color and glow

Also know that if you have the hands sealed and decide to relume them later, they will likely have to be repainted

Much thanks!

I think I would like to redo the centre second, but I would only do it after a lot of contemplation. Might even change my mind after the internal debate.

What a lovely duo you have there!
If I am correct, this 809 AOPA exclusive was basically produced only for 1 year in 1962, is that correct?
So very very rare :)

Thank you Nicolas,
Yes I believe the all black dial was made for about half of 1962 before switching to the white subdials. I have no idea how many were actually made.
Maybe Fred or Rene have a better sense?

Apppologiesfor a late answer , i am on vacation :-)

My blackwhite 809 from 1962 is 955791 , so earlier than the all black above
My best estimate is that there were 1000 cases made , so most likely 1000 watches made with the wide bezel and 1962 case

Interesting Rene, I guess they were making both black and white subdials that year at the same time??
(Unless mine were filled in with black shoe polish?)
Hope you are enjoying your holiday.

Is it just a visual effect or is the sliderule of the 809 not as well done as the sliderule of the 806?
I found markers a little bit "fatter" and not as fine as the ones on the Navi...

I think just an optical effect from the splayed bezel on the 809.
