My dad just gave gave me his Breitling 788. I have a few Issues. I have a photo of my great uncle with the watch in a photograph that was dated 1939. The back has heavy wear but the numbers on the back are 627876. The first number is so worn its a 70% guess. The other item is a letter from Breitling Switzerland, from 1991, where they authenticated the watch as late 1930's and 1400 produced. I can't find any if that matches. Thanks for the input. I have pic but it won't let me upload. I have reduced the resolution to nothing. greg.white@carlsbadca.gov

a bit surprised about the dates - here is a link to the dating of Breitling chronographs, it would make a 627xxx a 1945 production, 527xxx is outside the documented years, but early ref. 769 with lower production numbers would indicate very early 1940s for that.

The dial looks like an old redo but otherwise ok. Here's one I had a couple of years ago.

I've tinkered with it but doesn't look like there's any number before the 7. I asked him to send a higher res image

Top pic I took the definite "6", colored it purple, and superimposed it half transparent over the circle on the bottom half of the mystery number. The two are a definite match (99% confidence) , as they fit over each other perfectly. You can't even tell they are two photos.

This is how I spend my Saturday?

He's sending over a clearer pic using his wife's camera. Will post shortly. What should the serial number read on the case, if it were produced in the mid to late 30s?

Eric, the earliest 788s could be 52x.xxx, these appear around 1940, maybe 1939, though have not seen such early 18k
