Good day. I'm looking at purchasing an Avenger Blackbird, but am somewhat concerned with rubbing/scratching the black PVD finish. I know some people say that such marks provide character, and I'm not OCD picky about such things, but at the same time I don't want a 6 month old watch looking like it's 5 years old.

Just looking for any comments, experience with this finish etc. Thanks very much!

Quite a few threads on this. Breitling uses Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) which is very tough but it is a surface treatment so dings can show bare metal. Over time high rub areas can rub, and DLC rubs DLC so bracelets may become a problem. A 6 month old watch won't look 5 years old, but don't expect a 5 year old watch to look new.

Well the good news is I've also read that Breitling can refinish the watch to look new again (at what cost I'm not sure)...so in 5 or so years, it may be worth a trip to the spa!

Are you sure Breitling can refinish PVD/DLC coatings?
I was under the impression that Breitling only refinish non-coated surfaces.
I could be wrong of course.

Either way, it's a risky coating I would not consider. I have one or two coated cases and I am a bit of a WIS when it comes to case surface degradation. I have trouble wearing them.

If you like this coating then it's your choice, but for me I would would rather a watch that could be refinished by me or at very low cost through an AD.

Cheers

Agreed. I know that there are aftermarket refinishers who will strip the coating and reapply, but I am not aware of Breitling facilitating that. Breitling outsource the coating to a German company so it's possible.
