Local AD offered 15% discount on entire line. Is this standard or a good deal? I do not own a Breitling (yet) but am strongly considering a purchase.

If you were in the UK I'd say 15% is a fantastic, amazing, awesome, incredible, fabulous deal of epic proportions. As you're NOT UK based, then I'd say it's probably no better than OK.

I would say 20% should be in reach and if you can convince the AD that you plan to purchase several pieces you could get a 25% discount.
*I live in the US so if you are abroad I'm not sure of your market conditions.*
I tried this approach when I purchased my first Ling 2 weeks ago and got a 22% discount and was a quoted a 25% discount on my next purchase in the near future...
*These are cash/check purchases to eliminate the credit card transaction charge 2% I believe...*

I would suggest you avoid a big chain retailer and go with a smaller local AD, because they are more willing to wheel & deal IMO... I doubt any large retailer would ship you the piece to eliminate sales tax or give you the 2% discount if you avoid a credit card purchase.
Typically the larger retail chains prefer you buy the piece on credit so they can hit you with their BS interest rates...
Personally I would never make a luxury purchase like this unless I could afford to make the purchase outright.

You can get 20% off at any AD, and with a little searching on breitling's website or through this forum, you'll easily find ADs that sell for 25% off. If the offer of 15% is good on the entire line, then it all depends on which model you're buying. If you're buying a high demand model (Black Dial Super Avenger) that most ADs don't discount at all, then buy from your local AD at 15% off. If you're looking for a model that is usually discounted (Steelfish), then you can easily find an AD that gives 25% off. Or, you can always go with the group buy after introducing yourself to Mario. One other thing to consider is the savings on sales tax if you buy from an out of state AD, depending on where you live, you could save up to 10% right there.

From my experience with AD discounts:

15% - they are gauging
20% - standard
25% - someone is doing you a favour; this is a great deal
30% - the AD knows you or you are already large customer (and they know they can trust you not to tell anyone)

I disagree somewhat.
Less than 15% - Gouging (or youre at Tourneau)
15% - Standard issue discount
20% - Good deal
25% - Extroardinary deal. Youve probably bought before or been referred by a good customer
30% - Not common at all, but some dealers will do it. A more extreme version of te 25% discount
Over 30% - Highly unlikely, but some of us are able to pull it out of our ass.

Driver8 is it possible to get any sort of a discount in the UK I'm looking at buying my first Ling from an AD (Goldsmiths) I can be quite a cheeky sod when i'm shopping I like to feel i've had a good deal. But to be honest i never even considered asking for a deal when in Goldsmiths last weekend.
Is it possible??

Darren

Just to give you an idea of Goldsmiths - a couple of months ago I tried on a TT Chronomat with a diamond bezel at Goldsmiths just to see what it was like. The price was something like £8460 (if I remember rightly). I was telling the guy, "Hmmmm, it's nice, but diamonds really aren't for me", at which point he said "Well, if you were to buy today I'm sure we could do something for you on the price". And do you know what he offered to knock off the price?......................

£60. Woo hoo, really push the boat out for me there guys!

Having said that, I've usually managed to get a bit of a discount from my usual AD, but that's because I've built up a relationship with them (i.e. I've bought loads of watches from them!) over the last 10 to 12 years or so..... but even then the discounts I've got would be considered pretty rubbish in the States. Usually no better that 10% at the absolute tops. The best I managed to achieve from my AD was 30% off my Bentley Motors, but that was total luck in terms of everything dropping into place at an opportune time for both me and my AD.

If you want discounts, shop somewhere other than Brown's Britain.

I received right around thirty percent from my AD, on my first Ling purchase! I'd press for more from yours, or possibly start shopping!

In Britain, it's barely a full tank...

I'd advise flying to the US and purchasing a piece, wearing it back and shipping the box+receipt. You will pay around 30%-40% less for the watch and get a 'free' holiday out of it.

On the other hand, some ADs are extremely helpful and if service & convenience is important to you, or the US isn't an option/too much hassle, try David M Robinson in Canary Wharf.

I bought my first Ling a week ago, SA s/s black in Sydney, I managed 20% off but had to pay in cash, the retailer is an AD. With the exchange rate considered it came in at exactlly the same as the best US price, I thought for the Australian market which is tiny it was a reasonable deal.

If you can't get in on the group buy, I have someone who orders from an AD at 30% discount. I just got my watch today and will be posting pictures shortly. This guy is a legitimate jeweler and orders from an AD (the name is in my warranty book) with all papers, serial numbers, etc.

Thanks
