Am having some trouble deciding between the Navitimer World or waiting for the much discussed in-house GMT slated to debut at Baselworld 2014.

I absolutely love the size and look of the current Navitimer World, but not sure what the GMT might have in store. It's probably safe to assume the in-house movement will command a significant price premium over the current Valjoux piece, so that's another point to consider.

FWIW, I'm equally happy with either movement and the decision will be based purely on size/styling/price.

Should I buy the World now, or wait?

Well, any decision should be based on what you ultimately believe is right for you, but as you are asking for opinions. Why wait! If you like the Navi World (as I do) then hop right in and don't hesitate.

Enjoy.

Baselworld is not that long away now, so if I was you I'd wait and see if a new GMT Navi does indeed finally appear. Bear in mind it's all just rumour at the moment, but you'll be pretty annoyed if you buy a World now and then find you much prefer the new Navi GMT.

No doubt any in-house version will command a hefty premium, but surely for the sake of a couple of months, it's worth waiting to be in possession of all the facts.

Problem with making the decision now is that you are comparing known and unknown. Until the new piece is unveiled you're dealing with an unknown and for the sake of waiting another few weeks for a watch that can be with you for the rest of your life I would wait until I could compare the two pieces directly. If price is an issue and the movement doesn't bother you then maybe the World makes sense now, but you don't want to regret it once you see the GMT.

edit, Driver8 beat me to it.

The fact that you are asking the question is enough justification to wait.
That way you will be making a decision based on facts, being able to know the exact details of each model.
It is quite possible that you might pick up a World for a good deal once the GMT is out as some ADs might want to offload them from their inventory.

Aye that's a good further point.

I bought a world 2 years ago, and love it. I knew nothing about inhouse movements at the time, and now find myself wanting an inhouse movement navi gmt also. With that being said it would have to measure at least 45mm for me to consider it. I understand your dilema, and would wait since Basel is will be here soon. These watches cost a significant amount of money, so you should be sure about it.

There is no harm in waiting just a bit until Basel to at least see what is offered.

I don't think the navi GMT will be much more than the chronomat GMT, $9,820 if I remember correct. The navi world retail is $7,620. How large of a price tag do you guys think they are going to try to hang on this thing?

I've owned a Navi world and I still own the GMT. They are two very different watches. One is rather massive, the other one it's not. One hates the water, the other one doesn't even care about going down to 30metres while scuba diving. One is very flashy, the other one is more sports orientated. My point being; do you want a watch that is closer to being a 'tool' watch or more a dressy watch? Once you have decided those things I think it'll be easier for you to make a decision.

Or, you can do what I did and get both

Yeah, but I don't believe the basic elements such bling, water resistance and dressier look will be changed. Granted, size could change but being a Navitimer I'd expect the new World to follow the general style of the Navi line.

The movement probably will be the biggest change in the Navi World, and if what happened with the Navi 01 is anything to go by, the new price tag will reflect that too.

That's my point - he's presumably already decided about dressy vs. tool, water resistance, etc.

I was talking about price. Compairing price of a watch with a inhouse gmt.
