I wondered why some chronometer seconds had carries the motif "B" and some don't . I thought I had worked it out the once over that it was to separate quartz and auto/mech watches but this has proved not to be the case as I have looked at watch after watch recently

Just a design element I guess - same as painted vs. applied wings logos. The tail of the chrono seconds hand is a counterbalance but I'm not aware of any logic that drives the design.
