As an Aussie (who goes back there regularly) my experience is Australian retailers screw the public and charge so much for watches it really is much cheaper to fly somewhere, have a holiday, pick up the watch and come back.

It remains to be seen what effect this BB has on sales in Sydney. It might even provoke them to consider a store in Melbourne or the Gold Coast, if it stacks up. I agree with wessa in that even if it does not sell much it will get recognition. To some in Aus, that's important, but not to all I suspect.

Margins are tight in Australia on most retail, or so we are repeatedly reminded by just about every retailer with bricks and mortar stores! I also agree with berenger; perhaps as more stores appear prices might go up, but we are also told (repeatedly) that more competition lowers prices and is good for us. As long as there is not an artificial floor under everything of course. That's OK if you have a big enough population in a relatively compact location. Neither are applicable to Aus though.

So much on-line shopping going on that its hard to justify buying from a retail store on price alone. So, if you know what you want (and Aussies being very practical people) why look any further for the gear you need. But, if other services are your bag or reassurances or informed choices need a face to face place to get you to part with your wedge, then that might sway you to drop in to a boutique. It won't be for servicing your ling though, as that's not what a boutique is about (or so I am told). So is it hype, the Wow factor, special events or just a comfortable place to kill a few hours in town and pick up knowledge (before making that on-line purchase :) )?

I am kind of wondering who the owner(s) might be though. If its not Corporate Owned, could it be one of the existing retailers in the same area doing a joint venture with Breitling SA or someone else in retailing who sees this as a way to enter the market and bring a new experience to consumers? Its been known that an existing retailer has a share in the store on the opposite side of the road just to cover all bases. :strummin: Just thinking.

Breitling Boutiques are typically owned by the local distributors so the one in Sydney is most likely owned by DKSH Australia.

The one in New York City said they do not discount one cent.
You've got to pay full retail.
I wonder why the store is always empty...

Interesting to see the new BB in Sydney close to the Tiffany's - as they are in Manhattan, almost cross block from each other on 57th Street. The wife & I were there 2 weeks ago - I visited BB while she was at Tiffany. No serious damage done.

As there were a few replies, I thought I'd update this thread.
I just dropped the Chronomat off this afternoon for a full service & asked about the new Sydney Boutique.
Apparently it's actually opening for trading this Saturday. The official opening will be scheduled for sometime in March they say........

Walked past the store today around 11am. Curtains down work all complete
No sign of business yet
Whilst in sydney CBD went to qvb where there a dealer who sells Breitling,
She says that this weekend all Breitlings are 22% off on sale due to the fact the boutique
Store is due to open soon. And also informs me that they will not be stocking any more Breitlings.
And the boutique store has already employed the workers and that they won't be discounting any watches

There you go - the usual post-boutique pattern.

By the way was in darling harbour today and there's another retailer who stocks breitling, they to are having sale on 20% off. They have only 10 watches left. And they also said they won't be stocking them no more due to the boutique opening soon..

Would be a great time to buy then! Pity I've only just bought a few watches. Hope someone grabs up a bargain before they disappear
