Speedie all the way

well, Jon has a Speedie - and a very, very nice one, I dare say

Image

so World Time and/or Diver sound like the right choices to "sum it up" ?

next to the iconic designs of your current Speedmaster & Navitimer I'd choose
very carefully - vintage Breitling Worldtimers are very hard to find at reasonable
price points and, frankly, the modern Unitime just doesn't compare; so my
choice (next to the obvious Sub that "everybody" has ) would be the
Longines Legend Diver "tribute" - Super Compressor, robust, very affordable
and a wonderful re-edition of a true classic icon.

Image

or, if you want to go "true" vintage, the Enicar Sherpa SuperDive 600; again (still)
relatively affordable, not easy to find in decent/good condition, but with a bit of luck
and patience .....

Image

another perfect choice would be the mid 1960s Breitling SuperOcean ref. 2005 -
innovative, impressive, unique, iconic; a bit less "affordable", but still reasonable;
COULD even prove to be a smart long term investment (I'd also consider the Enicar
Sherpa SuperDive a decent choice here, should hold it's value quite well too).

Very cool ideas Fred. Thanks.

Some more looking on my part indicates that it might be possible to kill two birds with one stone and get a GMT diver. Then the sixth watch could be something vintage (1970 or earlier for me). Something made in 1970 would be of real interest as a birth-year watch. Only problem is that watch styles in the 70s seem to have some of the same problems as clothing styles.

The only Seamaster in the range retaining the classic wave-dial.

Thanks for that one Tom. I had totally missed this model. Stopped by the local Omega, Breitling, Rolex AD today and was sad to find that retail was quite a bit more than I expected. They also lobbied hard for me to not buy any pre-owned from a forum.

One bright spot was that they indicated that it is possible to just by an Avenger II GMT head if I already have a 22/20 strap.

Haha of course they lobbied for that, they want the sale.

Thanks for all the input. I think the choice is probably an Avenger II GMT (will have to see it and try it on). While I'd ideally like the Planet Ocean GMT, I think it is outside of my price range.

Completely up to you of course, but if the PO GMT is the one that you want then I wouldn't 'settle' for another one. Better to wait and save than spend and regret.

Spot on. Been there, done that: bought a cheaper variant of a watch I really wanted in the hope I'd be distracted and satisfied. Nope. Just ended up part-exing it. No point scratching the lesser itch...

I'll try and look at them side-by-side at the AD. The difficulty is the AD having the style of each I'm interested in. In the meantime I feed the watch fund. Thanks again.

Fred,

Coming back to your recommendations. If I wanted to go after either the Enicar or Breitling, where would I even begin to look for one? Here for the Breitling and probably WatchUSeek and Chrono24, but then you get into the whole issue of authenticity when you are a total novice. I've spotted a number of threads here about excellent fakes and I'm guessing with the age of some of these watches that papers and boxes are long lost to time.

Jon,
verifying authenticity is the easy part - Breitlings can be posted here in the vintage section, happy to verify any Enicar for u by pm, or you can post them in the vintage section on WUS. Finding them on the other hand is another issue - ebay is by far your best bet, it needs quite a bit of patience, persistence and luck, but that's actually the nice thing, a lot more satisfying for me than walking into a store and picking one of the many pieces on offer.

Seems like you've already made up your mind, but I'm going to throw out a vote for the submariner, no date. It's a timeless classic, and pre-owned it's not only affordable (depending on your budget, natch) but will likely hold its value well. http://www.therolexforum.com is a great resource for buying a previously enjoyed watch - be careful of course, to research the seller first.

mjb,

The Sub with no date is something I will probably add at some point. I also like the look of the Air King. I've been thinking about what appeals to me and talking with Fred some more. Like a lot of other collectors, watches with a connection to space flight appeal to me and are what I'm thinking I'd like to form the core of my collection. So once I have the watch fund at a sufficient level, I'll start a hunt for a Navitimer 809 (ideally manufactured in 1970). Eventually I'd like to add a Poljot, but I don't know anyone with knowledge of Russian watches.
