Filled - approximately equivalent to rolled gold on modern pieces - a laminated sheet of gold applied to the base metal rather than plating which is just molecular coating and therefore much thinner.

Thanks, Roff. Didn't know that, but I can say, that all my Gf- watches have this "stainless steel back" engraved.
