I feel stupid for asking (especially after owning Breitlings for years), but what is that noise/vibration coming from my automatic watches? What is going on inside my watch? Just curious.

To be honest with you, every now and then I feel I vibration in my Navi World. I shakes my wrist.

Exactly - it is the winding of the movement you hear and feel. Nothing to worry about as long as the watch keeps within its specifiactions. Wear it in health!

Its more than likely the rotor (the big half-moon shaped metal disc) spinning. The rotor is what winds the movement.

Yes and no.

The rotor is moving and causing the initial noise and vibration, but as the rotor stops there is also the noise and vibration from the transaltion of the rotor movement into the mainspring.

Be glad you get to hear something, means it is still "alive and icking"

Yes, what you are feeling and/or hearing is the winding rotor spinning around its axis. The 7750 is especially well known for this phenomenon.

Its the heart and soul of the watch, the very reason why I love automatic/mechanical watches.

The other interesting thing is, when you have a movement that only winds in one direction like the Valjoux 7750, and you hear/feel a particularly strong vibration because your movement caused the rotor to spin like nuts is likely spinning the rotor in the opposite direction than is required to wind, because there is no resistance on the rotor. When the rotor is winding in the direction it needs to wind the watch properly, it makes more noise, and creates less centrifugal force.

Hey all- this site is great! You all have such a vast knowledge of these timepieces . I recieved my watch as a graduation gift, after completing University studies. I absolutely love it! However, I have a question, some fool got into a physical altercation with me this evening, and i blocked his tackle, however his arm might have hit my watch, how strudy are these watches? Is it normal that when i twist my watch like up and down I hear a noise? Is this the watch winding or is there something loose? Forgive me if the question is somewhat that of a noob ..but I am a first time buyer, furthermore if this is normal..under what ways should it be heard...like near my ear or farther away?

congratulations on the watch, i wish someone bought me a nice watch when i graduated :p

the odd bump or crash should not damage your watch. you should not expose it to constant vibrations (e.g. take off your watch if youre using a jackhammer) but otherwise it should not be a problem at all. hearing noise from your watch is normal as it is mechanical. even within the same brand, the amount of noise varies quite a bit due to different types of movement. in general, you will hear the movement ticking right next to your ear, and you may hear the occasional winding sound when swinging your arm. so yes, if you tilt the watch up and down and hear a sort of creaking, that is normal. if something is wrong with the movement, it is more than likely the time would be quite off spec, so if youre really worried just see how many seconds you gain/lose tomorrow. if its far outside -4/+6 you should take it to an AD. if its slightly off -4/+6 you may still want to take it to an AD as that's outside COSC range, but i wouldn't really lose sleep over a second or two.

Chronomat has a B13 movement, based on the ETA 7750. It is one of the louder movements available, which I personally think is great. I love hearing all the winding and zips and buzzes and ticks. So yeah, your watch is probably fine. Enjoy. And stop fighting.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on both graduating and the watch!

Sounds like a real nice gift - wish my parents would have thought of something similar...

As you've already heard, your watch should be ok. If you are really REALLY unlucky asingle hit might damage the mechanism in the watch, but hopefully not. As you've read, the best way is probably to see if it keeps time ok, within COSC specs.

When I turn my arm I hear the movement spinning from, well, an armlength away, so that shouldn't be a worry either.

Wow guys thanks for the responses...so prompt! I checked the seconds against a quartz watch, I dont think there was any difference maybe a millisecond..so perhaps everything is in check here. I guess when people say +4/6 they mean 4 to six seconds off? I have not worn it today yet shook it...I did hear an occasional noise...perhaps the winder or rotor, and according to all the comments..its normal..I was just wondering though although thetime is accurate to COSC, could the noise be something loose, or jjust an overreaction?

for COSC certification a movement can be no more than -4 or +6 seconds off per day. they only test movements and not the actual watches, so if a watch is off COSC spec by a second or two either way i wouldnt go crazy, although technically it shouldn't be.

if you checked your watch against a quartz and there was no difference over the course of a day thats pretty amazing, theres nothing wrong with your watch. the only part that would be loose in your watch is supposed to be loose. its an automatic watch so the escapement has to swing. let me put this way, if you didnt hear a noise coming out of your watch when you shook it, that would be more strange.

A Chronomat is built to withstand a high shockload (more than 10g). Be careful the next time, You get into a brawl, You can easily break someones jaw, by hitting it with Your Chronomat.

then your Evo should be able to take it.

I've worn mine for several years now (no fights, thank God;
I'm too damn old) but I've taken a couple bad falls
and worn it under some really rugged circumstances.
It's still keeping great time.

As for those noises ... it's just that lovely Valjoux 7750
saying to you, "Hey, everything's okay, I'm still doing my job!"
Take good care of your watch. But even more important,
take good care of yourself!

hope this helps, I have gotten in fights with the watch on and I always worried about it breaking...I mean chances are its fine as long as its within COSC specs, if anything you could have it checked..
