Some of these posts have really helped me understand a bit more about this. Defiantly making me consider one, one day. Especially if it is not an everyday wearer. In that case, I'd be winding it regardless. Hmmmmm Portofino 8 day?....

Manual wind is no problem really. There again, I don't wear one particular watch enough of the time to remember that it needs winding every now and then. I am always resetting my automatics anyway, as they may not be worn for weeks, or months before I get round to them. So for me, it makes no difference either way. The best bit is that if you have an exhibition back and a manual wind, you get to see more of the watch all the time without auto rotors getting it the way.

Cheers. 8)

You could level the same comment at automatics vs quartz. Any mechanical watch is an anachronism in today's world.

Pretty much any watch is an anachronism in this age of time being everywhere from cell phone to computer, TV to microwave, etc.

I always wanted a hand wound watch. And also a watch with a hesalite crystal. My first manual wind was a Speedy, a great watch, but for reasons which I won't go into, I sold it.
Now I have a vintage Omega Geneve Dynamic I from 1968. All original, with hand wound movement and hesalite crystal. There is just something about the feeling of hand winding that gives a greater bond with the watch. In this case, the fact that someone wound it on a daily basis for 45 years makes it even more special to me!
At the same time, I have a Cartier Tank quartz watch. It's my only gold watch, and I don't wear it often, so I totally appreciate that it has the quartz movement. And I have two automatic movement watches. One is an old "Bumper" from the early 50s, and an Omega inhouse 8500 movement, which is about as current as you can get.
I just appreciate all of them for different reasons.
Cheers,
Carl

At Govbergs I tried on the Portofino IWC, and if I ever were to buy a hand wound watch, this is it! I could not take my eyes off of it, even with the Yacht Club on my wrist. I went with the YC do to it being a bit more my style for the moment.

Ps, the Santoni strap didn't hurt either, absolutely flawless!

I think there's a place for all three variations in a collection. All my nicer watches are autos, just more practical if you are switching off and have a date function. Have the obligatory winder too. I'll ultimately get a hand-wound, a vintage chrono or a pilot seem right for that. I have a couple quartz chronos, my only ones now, great for spot timing and the sweep reset is fun. Miss a 12 hour register however, for that once or twice a year it seems to matter.

All i can say is that there is something special about the sound of a manual (at least the ones I've owned). I love the loud tick and i feel the winding of it is almost like a bond between watch and wearer. I know that sounds totally weird but perhaps some of you might understand.
