Tried to learn to like them but failed miserably.

Only one I kind of like is the 243, but that is it.

The truly limited editions (those produced only for 1 year or 2) are usually called Special Editions (SE), comes with a big(ger) box, and a scroll (literally).

The non-fans ARE being chased lately unfortunately -- what with so many new models that doesn't resemble any Panerai DNA, and where many of the current year production of the exact same older models have undergone multiple MSRP increases that's just ridiculous. (Dejavu Breitling owners? :lingsrock: )

Resale prices are already dropping even for once-very desirable SEs because Panerai keeps on re-issuing these supposed "truly limited" special editions not only in yet another special edition re-run, but to add insult to injury, they ALSO release it in a "regular" limited edition production which are pretty much identical (eg. 249/448/424 or 373/449/425 or 382/507 etc).

Yes, it's inevitable for a large for-profit corporation to submit to the pressure of continuing to increase sales every year -- and when your business model is "limited editions" of every model, what else can you do? But still, it rankles many of the ol' timers who yearn for the good 'ol days when Panerai was unknown & NOT a status symbol...

Still, for some strange reason, I found that in the many GTGs (Panerai owners love to meet up even more than changing straps... :P) I've been fortunate to attend over the years in different cities & countries (Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Philipines, Malaysia, California, Vegas, NJ, NYC), everyone seem to easily find some common interest that makes camaraderie & friendship effortless (and where more often than not the topic was NOT about watches!). YMMV :)

 I guess that shows I'm not quite such a die-hard fan of Panerai as I am of Breitling! Your words there are very similar to what mine have been with regards to 90% of Breitling's offerings over the last few years!

To me, Panerai are still generally sticking to their roots, but I guess that's what marks out the dyed-in-the-wool Panerai fans like you H2F, out from guys like me who like them but aren't true Panerai fanatics. I stand corrected.

I have tried to like panerai over the years. But for whatever reason they just don't do it for me I do like the fact that the models have subtle changes and small differences can mean a whole new model.

IMO the watches wear extremely large so unless you have a huge wrist or your a fat person they tend to look odd. Yes I know it sounds harsh but this is JMO of course.

They do have a cult like following so if you ever grow bored of it you should be able to dump it fairly quick. Which is always a bonus in this watch hobby.

Like some others here, PAMS have slowly grown on me.

My wife on the other hand uses 'panerai' as a synonym for 'ugly' :-(

Naah... I'm more like you just a guy who likes Panerai a lot. I'm more grateful for all the friends I've made because of it even though nowadays many of those friends don't even wear Panerai anymore .

It's actually very liberating not to be salivating after the newest Panerai SIHH release. Freed up my watch budget to finally get my long-admired DSSD, Corum bubble skeleton & my first B&R! Navi World is next in the list... or E II if it looks as good in the metal (& the AD will discount heavily).. or darkside Speedy Pro... or...

That's actually a damn good review! The Watch Snob has always amused me in a lot ways, and I certainly don't always agree with him, but I enjoyed reading that, especially given his hiostoric hatred for Panerai.

He also makes a lot of sense regarding genuine horological acheivement vs tenuous historical links and over-wrought marketing, including the use of celebrity endorsement.

My 312 (Sergio's ex PAM!) is easily my favorite watch in my current collection. I don't wear it during the day because of the nature of my job, but 9 times out of 10 if we go do something after work.... The Panerai is strapped to my wrist.

The whole strap thing is an addiction to itself!

I agree with wessa. They don't do much for me either. Each to their own though.

I don't like the military theme Panerai has. I like planes, the romance of travel, sports and the colour yellow. That's why I'm in this forum all the time....
