I don't know you guys, but I meet 3 months ago a watchmaker in Old San Juan, Puerto
Rico. He is the 3rd generation in his family of watchmaker.

I asked him about these type of maintenance or service every 2 - 5 years, because he works with Breitling, Rolex, Tag, UN, Rado, etc. and his response to me was: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

If its working fine, keep using it and don't open it.

I like his sincerity.

Having seen the effects of a watch run with no oil, I don't.

So should a Breitling like my new Avenger II Seawolf be serviced every 2 years? Or it can wait 5?

I didn't, actually. I only sent the watch in to have the dead co-pilot battery serviced under warranty. They didn't give me a reason for doing what they did, but the watch came back completely serviced and looking like new. I took it to be good customer service, that they went the extra mile under warranty for a customer.

You can read my separate thread about my service I've got going on right now, but my concern now is that if they're now going to go the extra mile every time, just because my co-pilot battery dies every other year, but now do it on MY dime, I can't afford it!!!

Servicing is required every 5 - 7 years. If you dive frequently, especially in salt water, the seals should be checked every 1 - 2 years.

Thank you for the info!

I don't even take it to the shower. LOL So it can wait from 5-7 years. :-)

I am anxiously awaiting my quote. Though the watch is an 07, it was bought in April of 2011 (and of course is now out of warranty). Really have my fingers crossed for just a maintenance. Everything was in good shape, it's a daily wearer but with few scratches. This'll definitely be the most expensive battery replacement for a watch I've ever paid. But that's what we buy into, right?

Well, yeah, my battery replacement is costing me more than $600 every other year. Sheesh...

If you don't use the watch for wet work, have you considered getting the battery changed at the local watch shop (or doing it yourself) and putting $600 away in a "for when it goes properly wrong or I buy a new one" account every two years?

The more I hear about servicing costs, the more I'm coming to the conclusion that that's a sensible approach.

I agree that to keep the watch in perfect order it'll need money spent, however my 32 year old cheap Seiko auto keeps good time despite never being serviced, my 28 year old Seiko quartz chronograph has deviated less than a minute from my Superquartz in a year despite never having a service.

I have had my 25 year old Tag Heuer automatic (same movement as Breitling use) serviced independently this year (£160 all in) which was the first time in about 10-12 years and all was good inside the case. That watch is precious to me and I don't mind paying £16 a year to keep it for and well.

If the tweaks that Breitling do to the mechanical movements make them less reliable than a Tag, or the quartz movements, carefully selected at great expense, are less reliable than those in a £100 Seiko, then we shouldn't be cheerfully justifying that or watches need careful and expensive maintenance like a formula 1 car, we should be horrified that we've been conned into buying shiny junk!
