Hi,

As you may tell from my date join this forum I am new...

As per my previous topic I have finally ordered my first Breilting, a Super Avenger II, all black and steel.
The bracelet is the steel bracelet also.
As I have a 3/4 months wait, I have plenty of things to think about, and worry about until I get hold of it...
The main thing being that I am extremely active...
I run, road ride, Mountain bike ride, weight lift, crosstrain, volleyball, and even box...
The thing that worries is me, is having to take it off all the time...
The thought of losing it, and having it stolen scares me, so I am thinking that for certain activities I could perhaps keep it on, saving me leaving it in a gym's changing room...
How tough are the bracelets?
Obviously, dropping 50 pounds on the watch would not be a good idea... nor would be trying to fit such a big watch inside a boxing glove, and I would use a gps watch for cycling... but just in case it is on whilst messing around with friends, on the beach and so on... how strong is that bracelet to make sure that it does stay on?
I have no doubt one would notice it falling off your wrist...
Any thoughts?

I would probably limit my use of the SA, if I were you. That’s me though and probably it will not suit you. Clasps are funny things, some are more robust than others, but all I can think of is the number of possible instances when your watch might be a tempting acquisition for someone else (if you leave it in a more public place), or if you wear it in an active situation and it becomes a potential damage magnet. I wince at the thought of coming off a mountain bike wearing one. I know you won’t but I can’t get the imagery out of my head.

You might find more value in buying a replacement strap or bracelet of lesser value for day to day wear, and then swapping over for other occasions where the real bracelet might be more appropriate. It’s just a thought in the case of taking your watch off all the time. Breitling bracelets are pretty good, but they will wear with constant taking on/off. if its a cheaper one, it does nto matter.

As far as having to put it somewhere so you can go about an activity, then I think I would leave it at home those days and only wear after your return and are a rest.

My adage is; Breitlings for rest and recreation, Casios for mountain biking.

Wear it and enjoy it - they are designed to take abuse.

The only time that you would have problems with a new watch is if the spring bars are not located properly and you can test that when you pick the watch up with a good tug on the bracelet.

It's not going to fall off your wrist doing any of those activities.

I wouldn't wear it at the gym, no way, you're gonna scratch the steel with the iron weights. Too heavy for running or volley. You could beak it if you fall off the bike. Dangerous for boxing, you could seriously hurt your wrist or the back of your hand, or injure your sparing partner, I doubt your boxing trainer would let you wear it. For sports, there are much safer, lighter and more comfortable options out there.

I tend to wear beaters for the rough stuff. My view is that I can replace several of those for the cost of a bezel or crystal. Swimming ok, but not biking or arguing with the wife.

Yes, its surface damage that would worry me the most. You can't wrap them up in cotton wool, but there is no point tempting fate either.

My Colt Ocean (admittedly that's a quartz movement) has been battered every day for 13 years. It's been in the shower on a daily basis, it's been dropped on concrete, it's been stood on, I've caught it on a wall - right on the crystal - and it's barely even marked! It's been amazing! A real testament to its ruggedness.

Since I exercise everyday, I have a thing about taking something as important as this off my wrist, and then forget about it...
I have one lost my wedding ring by misplacing it, after taking it off for boxing...
I then started to worry about leaving it in a locker at the gym... But I suppose that I should just invest in a good lock, and put my valuable in a locker for the duration of the training...
Took my 15 years to buy one, I have not intentions on damaging it..
Saying this, I do expect it to survive the everyday hits, bruises, and life in general...

I agree about not wearing an expensive watch for very active sports. For example I have a Colt 44 and a Rolex sub, but I would wear neither for my sport which is swimming, although both would be fine in the water but for three different reasons:

1/ Sod's law would dictate that I would smash by expensive watch on the edge of the pool

2/ Constantly wearing either of the watches would require the seals to be checked/replaced annually as I swim twice a week all year round

3/ Finally both are too heavy for swimming, for which I wear an inexpensive Citizen eco drive diver on a nylon strap, which would probably be cheaper to replace than the annual seal replacement, particularly with Rolex at their prices!

However what floats your boat, but for most active sports a G Shock fits the bill, if it is , lost, stolen or just broken it wont break the bank.
