well, I liked Mr. Hill too !

That whole era was fantastic and I would equally have been happy with Phil, James, John etc. but would probably have been a bit upset if I had been called Bruce!

I am sure I am not the only one on this forum who wears vintage watches because of the facination of that period.

Recently one of my customers asked me if I thought Lemania movements (as in the Speedy) were more reliable than the Valjoux 72 (he did not ask to compare the Venus 178 as in the 810). I had to admit that based on my experience, the Lemania was more reliable (in terms of parts failures) than the Valjoux 72. If I were to compare the Lemania with the Venus 178, I would have to say the same thing - parts failures are more common on the 178. That said, I would prefer to work on 1) the 72 first, 2) the 178 second and 3) the Lemania last of the 3. The Lemania is harder to work on but rarely has parts failures.

That's an interesting point. My first watch, way back when was a Rotary Automatic, which I still have. It's only been serviced about once in 35 years, but its never gone wrong, runs within a few minutes a day, get started with a good shake ( something I would never do with my modern B) and is still going strong. My assumption has always been that it is because its a lesser movement, with lower tolerances that its actually more robust than a more accurate high end movement. It would be good to know what you think.

Rich - you would not be lonely with that Speedy. and they go well w/ blue striped shirts too.
just make sure it is truly correct - vintage Speedies are a snake pit.
