IMO it all depends what type of event it is and what role you are playing in it.
If it is something along the lines of a dinner with the Queen and you are sat on her right hand side I'd probably go watchless given no other choice.
If it is some dinner with a black tie theme with loads of attendants and you are just one of the participants - who cares really? There will be many others with their big Panerais, Planet Ocean XLs, SubCs, etc... strapped to their wrists.

I'm with Roff. The SA is not a watch for Black Tie. Something three handed (what are you gonna time at a formal dinner; the speeches?), understated on a classy leather strap is the way to go... or nothing.

SA is perfect Black Tie watch, in a Daniel Craig sort of way. I have no problems with this. Blue face, equally not a problem. Stainless would be best though in this combination, as blue would be more of a distraction and stand out. Blue leather will be more noticeable than stainless. Believe it if you can……….

Indeed.

It certainly isn't all that refined but hey, who really is? Then again, it all depends on the occasion, an award ceremony isn't the same as a wedding for example. If you're there for yourself, go flashy... Your watch is an expression of your personality after all and your taking your personality along, don't you? If on the other hand you're there to make someone else's day, try to look like what whoever it is might want you to look like.

Well all is good. And I was not alone. General council was sporting a SS cronomat. I saw at least three others with SS watches brand unknown. Times are changing. Thanks again for all those who posted advice!!

If you're not 007, forget it, you won't pull it off.
The watch is to be thin, or nothin'.

See, I told you it would probably work out well. :D

There is way too much confusion on appropriateness of watch types for special occasions and there are as many opinions on this as there are watches.

Wear what you think is right and don't give it another thought. The occasion is the most important thing, not the watch. 8)

All good.
