On the subject of marketing hype, does anyone really believe it actually takes 10 months to make a Breitling chronograph? (Chronolog 08, page 110, "Merciless testing")

Yes - but the "Merciless Testing" is hyperbole! And the 10 months is from start to finish - that's not 1 person for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for 10 months - there is plenty of time when the watch / movement is just sitting there - remember it takes time to check calibration etc, and I'm sure that there are times when partly assembled pieces are 'sitting around' waiting for the next step.

I think as long as every movement is calibrated to a reference standard, and QC applied to every fourth or fifth movement for verification, should be sufficient. It isn't like Breitling's QC is in question here, so I don't see the need for intense scrutiny.

BTW - EVERY company employs marketing "hype" in some manner. All the better when the "hype" is grounded in fact.

Hmm, I'd want to make sure I got the watch that was QC'd. Although machines are used extensively, these pieces aren't made by robots and humans make mistakes - I'm happier with every one being checked.

Again, I'm with you on both counts Roff.

Breilting are not sitting there and talking rubbish when they say each one takes 10 months to make. That IS how long it takes. But then they also aren't claiming that it takes 7 or 8 hours day for the entire 10 months either.

And yeah, if Breilting want to send every single movement they make to COSC, then that's fine by me! At least we don't have the worry about which has been QC'd and which hasn't.

Oh, definitely in agreement. I guess my point is that really, it isn't a situation where we needn't trust Breitling to do as advertised, so even if they didn't employ that degree of QC (which they probably do anyway), it wouldn't be a concern like it might be with other brands.
