I have a plan to find a secure home for my watches and with that comes a place for the winder. The research I done let me to Wolf Designs and their triple 2.7 modular unit. I have a space outside our home office, an alcove, that would be ideal for a small book case. I have been meaning to fill this space for the longest time and now I have a plan. The need for a prober watch storage area, up high and away from the kids, the need for some book storage, the need for a good quality winder along with the space that needed some sort of furniture had me thinking what to design to fill the space and accommodate all my requirements.

I designed my home, fitted it out and made all the furniture myself about 10years ago and it was fully finished when we moved in so this was a piece that I was looking forward to designing as I was the client, designer, maker, fitter and it was quite some time since I done that for my self. It was in an area in our home that was never visited by guests so I was happy to have the watches on full display as by my estimate only a very limited amount of guests would ever see it and those that did, would be trusted.

I hope to go through the start to finish process of the project here and I hope it's enjoyed and maybe it may give some people ideas for their own projects

So to recap, secure storage(out of kids reach), place for a quality winder, the space to fill and books to store.

These are the two ideas I had quickly put on paper. The first been discounted as it only served as watch/winder storage.

The second is what I have decided upon.

It's only just cut out. I had all the materials but I had to put some thought into the way I wanted the glass doors to work. They needed to be frameless and "soft close". I could get lots of glass door hinges but none were soft close and the only one I sourced I did not like as you could see the full hinge system through the glass.

Along with doing the cutting list I always do a few quick sketches and by the time that's done I more or less have a clear picture in my head of how everything is going to workout.

So the heres the raw Walnut solid veneered sheets ready to be cut.

And twenty mins later here the bulk of the cabinet before assembly begins.

That is gonna look real nice! I wish I had the room to build a sweet set up like that. Definitely post pics when your done. I like how you have the cabinet doors sitting flush with the winder opening. Clean.

That's pretty cool, dude. As me me, I'm very adept at hanging pictures and changing light bulbs.

I want this fitted and finished in a few days so the Electrician is coming today as I need a socket retro fitted just over the top of the cabinet as if I am away from the house for any length of time it gives me the option to fully turn off (Isolate) or unplug the winder.

I have changed the design of the doors from diamond quadrants to rectangle quadrants as the unit is, in proportion, quite narrow and high and I think the amended design will visually help with the proportions. These doors will be glued up and ready today.

I have came up with a very simple solution to the glass doors. I hope it will serve somewhat to hide the
Hinges and also be a carrier for the 6mm plate glass. Included in this design is easy access to the winder. The winder will be fitted into the Walnut panel at eye level. Full access to it will, hopefully!, just be a matter of popping off the hinges (by hand) and then removing 4 wood screws. A 2 mins job. On a side note to that I have made provisions to be able to drop the bottom book and winder shelves to retro fit another winder if needs be, giving 6 heads. I know its not even made and I am on about this but now is the time for the solution to be designed into it. That would made it a very simple job in the future, new glass and 3 pieces of walnut is all it would require to retro fit it out to a 6 head winder.

My aim is to have everything off to the spray finisher today and have the pair of glass doors ordered.
Only tricky part is getting the glass door sizes as I want a 2mm gap all around with a 1mm gap in the centre. Glass unlike timber can't really be minutely adjusted. So this will have to be measured correctly.

Ya butt joints, the workshop I have is really set up for sheet material granted sometimes solid sheet material. That's where the money is. At the monent its all comes down to price. Any work I do I try to have the client as happy as possiable. They are happy all is well, I get payed and a strong Recommendation.

No money in these joints any more.

Back on to the piece in hand, doors done and fitted for checking. Fillers cut out, glass ordered.

Door design.

Unit less fillers, sanded and ready to be loaded off to my sprayer guy, I can spray but I don't do it for health reasons.

The book shelves are all adjustable as its a hard thing to get correct. Do you space for the biggest book and have the smaller one lost in the shelf. Even the depth you have to think about. A4 depth is usually correct but that may be to small for large book and small books look terriable when pushed back past A4 sized ones. Its a thing you have to strike a balance with.
