I had been thinking about this ever since the E2's unveiling. due to the extreme price tag that 99% of us can not seem to wrap our brain around, what does this say about the future of the E1's?

1) Does pricing drop as there is indeed a new model (E2)? (as a model typically would)
2) Does price go up due to the demand going up, as most cant afford the E2's (or just do not want to spend that kind of money on a quartz)?



What are your predictions?

Market prices for preowned Emergency may well go up. It happened with the Rolex GMT when the new ceramic bezel and broad lug model came out.

I think the Emergency 1 will probably hold its' value well; it will in all probability go up as it may well become a 'classic', ie the first ever watch with a built in transmitter. There is also the geniune famous heritage in terms of it being the watch worn on the Orbiter missions (and probably was the watch of choice for the other balloon teams!).

As the watch is probably bought by people (like me!) who don't need the transmitter, it is just a nice thing to have - so the advantage of the double-transmitter in Emergency 2 is irrelevant. That and the fact that the Emergency 2 is really far too big to wear as a watch will all help Emergency 1 values; mine is really nice to wear but any bigger would be too big.

This sounds about right to me.

To early to tell yet, but if the rant on this forum regarding the E2 is anything to go by, then it may be a case that the price stays about the same for the E1 as it was pre-E2.

There have been so many grumbles about the size of the E2 and the wear ability of it for desk pilots, it may work out that the E1 holds its value (for the great majority of users) and the more likely take up of the E2 will be the preserve of those who use it every day for their work (Pilots/Search & Rescue, etc).

There is less grumbling going on in the Pilot fraternity about the E2, so maybe the design has hit the right market at last, and with Aviators in mind. They seem to be less concerned about size, as flight suits are a bit bigger than a John Philips handmade Saville Row suit.......

Nice one, it is the one I've got - hope you have got all the other bits to go with it; the 'B' cut out of the balloon material and the signed document along with the rather large box. It really is a very special watch indeed!

I think the Orbiter watch will certainly retain its' value of the Emergency 1s, as it links into the geniune achievement of the first round the world balloon flight.

That rechargeable battery on the new E2 is pretty damn cool.

The E1 is good, the EII is just better in every way. As far as a rescue device, unless you have flaming wreckage, the E1 will probably let you down- unless someone knows you're missing, and own an Emergency.

I wouldn't quite say it will let you down...a beacon drowning out guard tends to get some attention. I'm also wondering what group they're targeting with this price tag. I'd say most of us flightsuit wearers are unlikely to drop that kind of money.

I'm certainly going to keep my E1, I have always loved the design and size and still think it looks a great watch. The E2 is a bit too big and far too expensive for me.

It'll work just as well as before the E2 was released.

There's nothing wrong with the 121.5 frequency, it's still monitored by aircraft, emergency services, etc and as evidenced by the fact that the new one has that frequency it is needed for pinpointing a signal.
