I am contemplating the Colt Automatic, but also am also drawn to the Omega Speedmaster professional. This will be my first expensive watch and want to make the right decision.

which one would you choose and why?

They are both fine watches. I own both Breitling and Omega
timepieces, but since this is a Breitling forum I should say, "Get
the Colt." Of course, if this were an Omega forum, everyone
would be yelling, "Get the Seamaster!"

Not much help, am I? How about this: Go to an AD and try on each
watch. They're both fairly common pieces, so there's a good
chance dealers will have them in stock. Whichever one really
speaks to you loudest -- BUY IT! And wear it in good health.

Hi, you only need to take a look at my signature to know what I'm going to vote for!

However, to add a vague voice of impartiality to this - I've actually owned 3 Seamasters myself in the past - a "Bond" SMP quartz (my first stab at a "prestige" watch), a "Bond" SMP auto, and one of the electric blue dial SMP quartz (which I used as my beater for a year or so). All are nice watches, and the auto kept superb time, but at the end of the day Breitling simply make better watches IMHO. They feel more solid, the bracelets are finished nicer, they have screw links instead of pins, the attention to detail is just that bit higher with Breitling, and I personal prefer the image.

I also like the fact that while Breitlings aren't exactly rare, they are a damn sight more rare than the good ol' Omie SMP! Take a walk into any bar in the land and I guarantee you'll see at least one Bond SMP on someone's wrist.

So after owning 3 Omegas, I can honestly say I don't think I'll own another. Not because they are bad - far from it in fact - it's just there's always a Breitling which in my opinion is better.

I just sold my Colt, but I do have a Speedmaster... However, deciding between the two for a first watch, I'd go for the Colt every day. I like the Breitling brand more than Omega (surprise) due to design, image and models.

I'm going to go against the trend here and suggest that you at least look long and hard at the Omega.

The Speedy Pro (not Seamaster, folks) is one of THE classic watches, instantly recognisable and, to borrow a phrase I read somewhere else, historically significant. The Colt, on the other hand, is certainly a nice watch, but to me it just looks like an entry-level Breitling. I'm not saying Omega is superior to Breitling (I was a Breitling fan long before I was an Omega fan) but I do think the Speedy Pro is a superior model to the Colt. Anyway, isn't it quite a bit more expensive?

One more thing - the Speedy is manual wind, so if you don't want to wind your watch every day then this may not be the way to go.

I prefer the pro 2 bracelet that the Colt would come with compared to the Omega. It's a matter of perference though, best bet is to try both on at an AD like what was already recommended.

My first B was a colt, and I was also considering an omega. I only considered it because they were similar. The colt is great, and I would definitely recommend it. Both are very high quality, so just pick the one that you like more. Hit up your AD and take your pick.

Try them both and you will be sure to like one better than the other. If it was between the Cold or the Speedmaster Pro, for me the Speedmaster would be a nicer choice. If it was between the other Breits....then it's a whole different story.

I don't think you can go wrong with either choice, it all boils down to which design you prefer. It doesn't matter that the Colt is so-called "entry level", or that the Seamaster is "common". Rolex punches out over a million time-pieces a year, which makes them very "common" also, but many people aspire to own a Rolex.

The "iconic" Swiss brands (Rolex, Omega, Breitling, TAG, IWC, Fortis etc etc etc) all have their own "look", and when you are about to put your hard-earned on the table for one, you'll go for the one that you prefer the look of. It doesn't matter what the "brand" is (unless you buy "brands") - any quality watch, Swiss made or otherwise, is most likely going to last you many years.

No quality watch brand is definitively better than any other - your mega-thousand dollar Rolex will scratch and dent just as easily as a $100 Seiko and will not necessarily be any more reliable. Same goes for an Omega/Breitling/whatever. A cheap and cheerful Japanese quartz is most likely going to keep better time than any Swiss mechanical (automatic or manual wind), whether or not said Swiss automatic is a so-called "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified", "COSC certified" or any of the other marketing hypes used to justify outrageous prices.

Rolex has it's own "look", as does Omega, Breitling and all the other major Swiss watch brands. It all boils down to which one you like the look of most, and which one does the job you want it to do (i.e. floats your boat).

There are many watch forums around, some (like this one) are brand-orientated and are excellent sources of information and feedback from owners. Others are more general in scope and it is on those forums where you will get information on a broad range of watch brands and models.

Take your time, educate yourself, and then go shopping and enjoy your purchase in good health!
