Hello everyone, I am new to both this forum and to Breitling watches. I look forward to learning from you all.

A friend of mine has recently offered to sell me one of his Breitling watches. I'm not looking for value information here, because I trust him. However, I would like to know more about the watches and their subtle differences. Remember... I know very, very little about watches. I notice small differences in each, the fonts of the numbers, shape of the watch. Can anyone identify these, would any specific one be considered more or less desirable?

Are they all marked "2509" on the back? Maybe one or a few "2509 29"?

"555" is another possibility.

I will have to ask my friend about what the backs might say. Would that be a serial number, or form of model identification?

That would be the model number. Serial number would likely be on the inside of the caseback.

I wasn't remembering correctly. I think they might be marked as reference number "2914" or "2910 29" with a six-digit serial number on the back or inside the caseback.

A "555" won't have a serial number, inside or out.

2915 is another likely possibility.

Hello everyone, thank you again. I did ask about model numbers, so we'll see in a bit. My understanding is that is an old picture and some of those watches are probably long gone. I hope he still has a couple with the black face!

Here is some text from a message he sent me, I hope he doesn't mind me sharing this:

Quote:
Anyway, the short version: I've got a couple of those left, Some are gone. I used to sell a lot of these between 2000-06, approx.
I brought them back from China Matt, where I befriended an old 3rd generation watch maker. He collected them, would send them off to Shanghai to get the dials refurbished, since very few to none from the early 50's survives looking great...and then do the mechanical work himself. He was 65 when I met him, in a tiny little booth half the size of your bathroom, in a winter-cold antiques market in Beijing...

I am a little curious about the dials being refurbished. I asked him if he could expand on that at all. I'll check back in when I get some more info.

Thank you everyone!

It is what we suspected I am afraid. They are likely Chinese fakes - a lot of fakes are coming out of China these days that look like that.

I did not know that you suspected that? I'm supposed to get pictures of the movements ect and will post pictures if that helps further prove it. That would be disappointing, but also a relief since I have not bought anything yet.

For what it's worth, the man that I am dealing with has always been a stand up guy. We share a mutual interest in bicycles and he has done me many substantial favors out of generosity. I don't question his character. What I am trying to say is, if they are fakes, he may not know it either.

Hello again everyone, Happy Easter. I got pictures of three watches for you to evaluate. I'll do one watch per post.

Watch #1. I am told that this watch has it's original face. I like this one.

Quote:
Stainless case is 32 mm. Original winding crown with the Breitling script "B" embossed on it. Blued hands. Luminescent markers which are faded now. Original radium retains no luminescence. Back is stamped with the "B" and BREITLING in block letters. Number is 2906 29. Movement is stamped Breitling and is very clean. Runs well. Has a smooth brown padded leather strap with stainless buckle.

Watch #2.

Quote:
Here is another black dial Breitling. Stainless case is 32 mm. Winding crown is original with the Breitling "B" on it. Gold hands and luminescent markers. Same white lettering on the dial. Back is stamped with the Breitling script "B" and BREITLING. And the number 2916, which is the model number. Movement is stamped Breitling as well. (As was the last one).
Very clean movement. Has an embossed, green leather 18 mm strap on it with stainless buckle.

Runs well and keeps good time.

Watch #3

Quote:
Stainless steel case is 32 mm diameter. In good, used condition. Number on back is
2904 29. Winding crown is a replacement and stands proud of the case a bit.
Gold colored hands and raised markers, with numerals at the 12, 3,6 and 9 positions.
White lettering on dial with the Breitling script "B" and Breitling in block letters and "Geneve". Under the pivot point it is marked "17 jewels, antimagnetic and Shock Protected". Takes 17 mm strap, which is not included.

Runs well and keeps pretty good time.
